Conducting - Charpy Impact Test

This document provides procedures for conducting a Charpy impact test using an Avery Denison Charpy Impact Machine with a 300J capacity. The procedures include checking the specimen identification and dimensions, verifying the machine calibration, soaking specimens at the desired temperature, transferring specimens to the anvils within 5 seconds of removal from the soaking container, and recording the impact energy values. Specimens are checked against GO and NO-GO gauges and all dimensions must comply with ASTM E23. The machine friction and windage losses are checked and must be within allowable tolerances.

Conducting Charpy Impact Test

Using Avery Denison Charpy Impact Machine (Capacity: 300J)

Test Method: ASTM A370-05, ASTM E23-06, And BS EN 10045-1:1990, ISO 148-1:2006

A. To Ensure Correct Sample Was Taken for Testing

1. Before conduct the test, check the following :
a. Identification / marking on the test specimen
b. Test temperature

B. Checking of specimens
1. All machined charpy impact specimens shall complied with the following :
a. GO & NO GO gauge
b. All dimensions of the specimens specified in ASTM E23
2. Identification of the specimens are properly stamped or/and engraved

C. Checking of Machine
1. Checking procedure shall be as follows :
a. Set the indicator at the maximum energy position. Without any specimen, release the
pendulum to free swing
b. Record the energy reading
c. The friction and windage losses should be within allowable tolerance

D. Soaking of Specimens
1. Place the specimen, using self-centering tong and thermometer onto the grid in the container
2. Pour acetone into the container such that the acetone level at least 1 above the specimens
3. Add solid carbon dioxide to acetone-filled container to obtain the necessary temperature for
the charpy impact test.
4. Soak the specimens at the desired temperature maintain at 1C for at least 10 minutes.

E. Conducting the Charpy Impact Test

1. Set the energy indicator at the maximum scale reading
2. By using self-centering tong, place the specimen in the proper position of the specimen anvils
and must be transferred from container within 5s to strike. Plane of symmetry of the notch
shall be no more than 0.5mm from the anvil symmetry.

3. Record the charpy impact energy value reading in unit Joules.

4. Energy value reading is more than 240 Joules (80% of machine capacity) shall be considered ass
approximate only. (to be indicate in the test)
5. If the test piece jams in the machine, disregard the result and check the machine thoroughly for
damages or misalignment that would affect the result.
6. Record the result after the test was done.
