H. Course
Surveys reactions of aliphatic and aromatic compounds including modern concepts
Description of bonding, mechanisms, conformational analysis and stereochemistry. Includes
from Catalog the following topics: alkanes and cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, biologically
active acetylenic compounds, electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions, resonance,
alkyl halides, and SN1, SN2, E1 & E2 mechanisms.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
1. Recognize and sketch any organic functionality.
2. Name simple organic compounds using IUPAC system.
I. Course 3. Differentiate between acidic and basic organic compounds.
Learning 4. Illustrate the general concept of isomerism and stereochemistry.
Outcomes 5. Synthesize organic molecules from available starting materials.
6. Reproduce various organic reactions (addition, substitution, elimination, and
rearrangement reactions).
7. Distinguish between aromatic and non-aromatic compounds and understand
their reactions.
8. Propose and sketch detailed mechanism for related chemical reactions.

Organic Chemistry, 11th edition, T. W. G. Solomons and C. B. Fryhle, 2014, John
Wiley & Sons, USA.
K. Teaching and The teaching and learning tools used in this course to deliver the subject matter
Learning include formal lectures, PowerPoint presentations, in-class demonstrations using
Methodologies models, class debate/discussion, and problem-solving sessions. Class lectures are
designed to help students develop problem-solving skills and understand the
material being emphasized in the textbook. It is highly advisable, to get the most
out of each lecture, that one always read the appropriate sections before they are
discussed in class. The reading assignments will be announced during class time.
Access to the course material can be gained through ilearn.aus.edu

M. Explanation of
The final course grade will be calculated based on:
Assessments Quizzes: They collectively worth 20% of the final course grade. Quizzes will
normally take place during regular class time in the classroom.
Exams: They collectively worth 50% of the final course grade. Exams will during
regular class time in the classroom.
Final Exam: The final exam is worth 30% of the final course grade and it is
comprehensive, covering all material presented since the beginning of the
semester.
N. Attendance
Students are required to abide by AUS regulations regarding attendance. If you
miss an exam, due to illness, a medical report should be submitted to the instructor
no later than three days after the exam. In this case your grade will be obtained
from your performance on other labs and exams. A grade of zero will be given for
any exam missed without a medical excuse. There will be no makeup exams or
quizzes. Also, students must only attend in their official sections as registered
through the banner. All students are expected to strictly observe and adhere to the
standards of academic conduct as detailed in the Student Academic Integrity Code.
O. Mobile Phone Students should ensure that mobile phones are switched off before entry to the
Policy classroom. If a mobile should ring while the class is in session, it could be
impounded and held for a period of time in the Chemistry Department office.
P. Student
Academic Students are expected to strictly abide by the Student Academic Integrity Code as
Integrity Code stated in the AUS Undergraduate Catalog.
