Lesson Plan Science Wed Oct18th

The document outlines a 5th grade science lesson plan about sustainable fishing and conserving water to support life in the oceans. Students will play a game where they simulate fishing and doubling fish populations to learn how overfishing harms oceans but sustainable practices can help increase fish numbers. The lesson integrates science, math, and collaboration skills and includes engaging the class, an interactive activity, and reviewing what was learned.

Name: Grade Level: Day:

Khadija Mohammed 5/E Wednesday October 18th 2017

CCSS Standards: 5ES4 Explain the effects of air and water pollution on the environment and living
things.

Main Lesson Aims (Concepts, Procedures, & Processes):

The aim of this lesson is to make students aware of the importance of supporting life in the oceans
which could be done through sustainable fishing and conserving water. This lesson integrates two
different subjects (Science and Mathematics) since the activity that will be held requires counting
and doubling. Therefore, students will improve their collaboration skills because they will be
working together as a team in order to complete the given tasks.
Materials:

teacher books NA

student book(s) NA

worksheets/ papers NA

teacher materials White board

student materials/ Colourful square shaped tiles

manipulatives
technology Projector and computer (present a circle graph (represents the earth)

other NA

Key vocabulary with definitions (and pictures if appropriate):

Word Glossary definition Image

Conserve Use less

(Example: You sharp your pencil less because
you dont want it to finish).

Sustainable Able to keep a process going for long time

(Example: Can I stay up late night completing a
task? Yes, I can but I cant stay up for three other
days because I will be tired).

Overfishing Taking out to many fishes

(Example: When people buy too much fish but
they dont eat all of them).
Students Prior Knowledge:

Students have learnt about the water cycle, in which they investigated an experiment on how could
evaporated water condensate and create clouds also they have done an experiment of scarcity of
fresh water. In this lesson they will be learning about how could people support life in the oceans
which could be done in two ways (conserving water and sustainable fishing).

Possible Problems and Misconceptions:

Negative behavior could occur throughout the lesson since all of students will be working in their
groups and sharing manipulatives (square tiles). Therefore, some students might get confused while
completing the activity. Also, they might think the sustainability only applies for fishes not in real
life.

Solutions:
Behavior rules will be clearly announced at the beginning of the lesson in order to avoid any
negative behavior from occurring. However, if a certain student continued misbehaving she will be
told that her whole group will loose a point from their jigsaw profile (Online behavior system). In
such way, the student will behave well because her team will inform her that they want to win points
and she needs to behave accordingly. In addition, teacher will model the activity for the students in
order to give them an idea about what are the accurate steps needed for completing the task.
Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher language: Sustainable fishing and conserving water.

Student language: Students will be completing sentences orally in order to ensure that they are
using the keywords effectively. For instance teacher would ask the students by the end of the lesson
Fishing should be ., Students must be able to say that fishing should be sustainable.
Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): Time:

At the beginning of the lesson teacher will:

First review the classroom behavior rules in order to avoid any occurring misbehaving.
Secondly, she will review students prior knowledge by asking them what have they
learnt in their previous lesson with their teacher. Then she will announce the goal and 10 minutes
aim of the lesson to the students in order to make them aware of what they will be
learning throughout the lesson. Thirdly, she will call out and explain the key
vocabulary (Overfishing, sustainable and conserve) that will be heard and used within
the lesson. Then she will display a circle graph thats represents the earth as it shows
the 9ths and ask the students Grade 5, who can guess and tell me how many of the
nine sections would be land since this graph is the earth?. Students will discuss with
their group the question in order to find out the answer. They are expected to say 3
sections and the rest is ocean. After that she will inform the students to that the earth
is also called Blue planet. Finally she will draw the process of how life is like in the
ocean currently (damaged because of overfishing) and what are the ways that could be
done in order to support life in the ocean.

(Thus, students who are going to behave well and participate within the classroom will
be rewarded by adding point into their jigsaw profile).

Transition: Teacher will transition the students in to the middle part of the lesson
(activity) by saying ABC- 123.
Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures):

At the middle of the lesson teacher will:

Inform the students that they will play a game called Fish, double and increase. In
which, students will be given one set of colourful tiles placed inside a bag in each
group (the amount of blue tile will be 30 while the red, green and yellow will be 20
total of 90 tiles). Teacher will instruct them by explaining to them that they will find a 20 minutes
bag that contains many squared tiles with different color. Therefore she will tell them
that the game is divided into three steps: The first step is to close their eyes (rule of the
game) and put their hands inside the bag and take a very small amount of tiles (this
will be repeated several times in order to ensure that each student had a turn).
However, she will inform them only one student will be doing it at a time and when
one student is grabbing the tiles, the rest of the group members need to monitor and
observe the student in order to check whether she opened her eyes or took large
amount because that is against the rules of the game (they will have 5 minutes in order
for each student within the group have a turn). For example, teacher would say Grade
five now when your eyes are closed you will imagine that your hand is a driftnet and
you are fishing small amount of fishes.
As a next step, teacher will inform the students to look at the tiles that are left inside
the bag and inform them. Grade five, the tiles that are remaining inside the bag are the
amount of fishes left inside the ocean, do you think they can increase their population
(number). Students will have one minute to think and then she will tell them In your
teams, you are going to double the numbers left according to their colours so if you
have two red double the number two in order to get four red tiles.
As a last step. She will ask the students why did they will double the tiles? (to increase
the population of fishes in the ocean). She give them an example by saying When you
doubled the tiles its like a mother fish gave birth to a baby fish and that how the
population increases).

(Thus, students who are going to behave well and participate within the classroom will
be rewarded by adding point into their jigsaw profile).

Transition: Teacher will transition the students in to the middle part of the lesson
(activity) by clapping her hand.
Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment):

At the end of the lesson teacher will:

Ask the students if they have enjoyed the lesson and what part they enjoyed the most. 10 minutes
In addition, review with them what they have learnt by asking them some questions in
order to ensure their understanding such as: Grade 5, who can remind me and tell me
how can we support life in the ocean?. Then she will ask them closed ended questions
Fishing should be . (sustainable), in order to make them use the key vocabulary.
