Moragahakanda Kaluganga Development Project Material Laboratory

This document provides the material specifications and mix design for a grade 25 concrete. It details the aggregate types and proportions to produce 1 cubic meter of fully compacted concrete containing 404.1667 kg of cement, 710.1567 kg of fine aggregate, 1158.677 kg of coarse aggregate, and 194 kg of water. The mix design calls for replacing 25% of the fine aggregate weight with quarry dust to achieve the target 7 and 28 day compressive strengths.

The calculations of quantities
The calculated proportions are based on a yield of 1m3.
The desired volume of trial mix is 0.035m3.
Specified characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2 28 days with 5 %Defective

Standard deviation (s 6 N/mm2 k=1.64 Target mean strength 35 N/mm2

Cement type = 42.5

Aggregate type = Coarse Crushed
Fine Crushed (25%)by weight + sand(75%)
Approximate compressive strength of concrete mixes made with 0.5W/C

figure 1. use (Relation between compressive strength and free water/cement ratio)
free water cement ratio = 0.62 Specified max=0.47
The specified slump = 50-100 mm Lower Value 0.48
Specified maximum size of aggregate = 20 mm
Approximate free water content required to give various levels of workability
Maximum size of aggregate is 20 kg/m3 for crushed aggregates

The free water content = 194 kg/m3

Cenent content = {free water content / (w/c)ratio}
= 404.1667 kg/m3

figure 2. use (Estimated wet density for fully compacted concrete)

The relative density of aggregate on saturated dry basis = 2.71
The concrete density = 2467 kg/m3

Total aggregate content = (concrete density - free water content - cement content)
= 1868.833 kg/m3

For maximum size aggregate 20 mm,Slump of 75 and fine aggregate with % of fines
passing through 600um sieve 50

figure 6. use (free w/c ratio for various values of workability and maximum aggregate size)
The proportion of fine aggregate is 38 %

Fine aggregate content = Total aggregate content fine aggregate propotion

710.1567 kg/m3
coarse aggregate content = Total aggregate content - fine aggregate content
1158.677 kg/m3
