Final PR 1

The document discusses a research study conducted by Vanna Louise C. Dumlao on the effects of overusing social media on the study habits of students at Divine Word High School in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan. The study involved distributing questionnaires to 15 junior high school students to understand how spending leisure time on social media impacts their study habits. The results found that overuse of social media leads students to feel lazy, become distracted from their studies, and have less time to complete other tasks. While social media can provide information for research, its overuse results in students forgetting lessons and having lower academic performance.

ABSTRACT

The Internet has undergone rapid development, with significant impact on social

life and on modes of communication. Social media refers to the means of interactions

among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual

communities and networks.

This study will inform the readers about the advantages and disadvantages of over-

using the social media to the students of Divine Word High School as well as the effects

on their study habits. In order to study this matter, the researcher randomly distributed 15

questionnaires among the junior high school students of the Divine Word High School -

Sanchez Mira who are currently enrolled during the School Year 2017-2018.

The importance of this study is to inform the readers and other students about the

effect of over-using social media and how it affects their study habits.

According to the results of the study, the researcher figured out that the students

who spend their leisure time on using social media affects their study habits by getting

lazy, being distracted to their studies and don't have enough time to do other tasks.

There are only several advantages and disadvantages that were figured out during

this study. The advantages of over-using social media are that, they gain more

information by using these and they can use it for research purposes. Disadvantages, on

the other hand, that were figured out are that, they tend to forget their lessons and have a

low academic performance.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The definition of social media is the relationships that exist between network of

people (Walter & Riviera, 2004). In the last ten years, the online world has changed

dramatically. Thanks to the invention of social media, young men and women now

exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing

rate. Seventy-three percent of wired American teens now use social media websites

(Oberst, 2010). Schill (2011) states that the social media sites encourage negative

behaviors for teen students such as procrastination (catching up with friends), and they

are more likely to drink and drug.

Social media is still a new phenomenon with a lot of areas still in need of study.

Additionally, new technologies rapidly emerge each year and create cause for further

research. With that said, some research has already been conducted on social media. The

existing research examines social network sites and their effect on offline social circles

including the emotional closeness with those offline circles. Pollet, Roberts, and Dunbar

(2011) looked into the question of SNS and their effect on offline relationships. Their

results found that for participants who did use an IM [instant messenger] or SNS, there

was no significant correlation between time spent on IM and online social network size

(Pollet, Roberts, & Dunbar, 2011, p. 255).

Social media nowadays has made an enormous impact on the lifestyle of

individuals around the globe. It has already been a huge contribution to the daily social
DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 2

routine of the people in various types of communities. High and middle class society is

now into social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Tumblr and etc. Even

low-class people are into these social networking sites as well. Actually, these social

networking sites have played a big part to the global community in terms of

communication purposes.

Some use these sites in order to communicate to their loved ones across the globe,

in different countries as possible. Companies and business people use it for selling and

advertising products and for gaining customers. Some also use it as a media for gaining

friends and for engaging in relationships and others use these internet sites for gaming

purposes. But what is bothersome today is the way students use these networking sites.

Social Networking is helpful among students in ways such as communicating

about projects and tasks in school but some students cross the boundaries of using such

sites. They use it for sexual and intimacy purposes. Some use it for gambling purposes.

Misuse of such sites are what makes the social networking world hazardous to all people

involved in it especially to students of minor ages. Whats more harmful is that it seldom

leads to the destruction of the students foundation for their future which is education.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, the study aims to determine and explain the effects of over-using the

different social media applications on the study habits of the students in DWHS SM

with the following questions:

1. What are the effects of over-using the social media applications to the

students study habits?

DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 3

2. How does it affect to the students study habits?

3. What are the advantages of over-using these applications?

4. What are the disadvantages of over-using these applications?

Significance of the Study

During the course of this study, the researcher was able to found out what are the

advantages and disadvantages of over-using the social media applications. The study can

also help to identify on how it affects on the study habits of the students. Results of this

research would be beneficial specifically to the following:

Students - students who are the respondents and are the main concern of the

study. With this, they will be able to and be informed and they can assess whether if the

impact as well as the effects of social media to them is somewhat good or the other way

around;

Researcher - the researcher can have a final say and can gain more knowledge

about the said study. Curiosity can be driven away and also, the researcher can come up

with the idea of how do over-using social media affect students study habits.

Scope and Limitations

The study focuses on the effects of over using the different social media

applications to the study habits of the students. It is a common topic but covers a lot of

factors. The research further explains the positive and negative impacts of social media

applications to the study habits of the students. The study considers the student's personal

information such as their name, age, sex, year and section.

DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 4

The researcher limits the study to 15 students enrolled in the first semester of S.Y.

2017- 2018 in the Divine Word High School Sanchez Mira. The students were

randomly picked considering all the grades and sections of the said school. Each of the

respondents was given questionnaires.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social media refers to the means of interaction among people in which they

create, share, exchange and comment among themselves in different networks. Andreas

and Michael (2010) are of the opinion that social media is a group of internet based

application that builds on the ideological foundation and allows the creation and

exchange of users generated content.

The increased use of Social Networking Websites has become an international

phenomenon in the past several years. What started out as a hobby for some computer

literate people has become a social norm and way of life for people from all over the

world (Boyd, 2007). Teenagers and young adults have especially embraced these sites as

a way to connect with their peers, share information, reinvent their personalities, and

showcase their social lives (Boyd, 2007).

With the increase of technology used for communicating with others and the

popularity of the Internet, Social Media has become an activity that is done primarily

on the Internet, with sites like MySpace, Face book, Bebo, Friendster, and Xanga (Coyle

et al., 2008).

According to Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010) social medias grab attention of

the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions

including useless chatting. Based on the above statement we can say that social

medias may badly affect the academic life and learning experiences of the student.
DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 6

Trusov, Bucklin, and Pauwels (2009) noted that the Internet is no doubt evolution

of technology but specifically social networks are extremely unsafe for teenagers, social

networks become hugely common and well-known in past few years.

Arnold and Paulus (2010) found that even when social media is used for an

educational purpose, students incorporate the technology into their lives in a way that

may differ from the intentions of the course instructor.

The internet usage effect of social media, in views of Nielsen (2012) is that,

students continue to spend more time on the social media than any site. The total time

spent on social media across mobile devices increased by 37%, 121 billion minutes in

July 2012 compared to 88 billion minutes in July 2011.

Social networking and their educational uses are of interest to many researchers.

Living Stone and Brake (2010) in their opinion said social medias, like much else on the

internet representing a moving target for researchers and policy makers.

Teenagers now use the Internet for the majority their daily activities and

information gathering, as opposed to older generations who used resources like the

television or newspaper (Lewis, 2008).

Kirschnera revealed that students who multi-task between social media and

homework are likely to have 20% lower grades than a student who does not have a social

media in visual range. Kirschnera believes that even running a social media on the

background on a student's PC while studying or doing homework could lower a student's

grade. He believes that "the problem is that most people have Facebook or other social
DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 7

media accounts, their e-mails and maybe instant messaging constantly running in the

background while they are carrying out their tasks" (Enriquez, 2010).

An ever increasing growth rate of SNS not only calls for the parental and teacher

monitoring of student users but also attracting the focus of academicians and researchers

towards this phenomenon. Students use of social media continues to create challenges

and issues for higher education professionals and keeping abreast of these challenges has

proved difficult because of the speed at which new technologies are being introduced

(Bugeja, 2006; Cariccioso, 2006; Finder, 2006; Quindlen, 2006; Shier, 2005). There is

evidence that higher education institutions have taken initiatives in disclosing information

about online social networking involvement to their students (Read et al., 2006).

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researcher used qualitative research to conduct this study entitled Over-usage

of Social Media and its Effects to the Study Habits of the Students.

Locale and Respondents of the Study

The respondents were 15 randomly selected junior high school students of the

DWHS SM who are currently enrolled for the School Year 2017-2018. The

respondents ages range from 14 16 years old.

The study was conducted at Divine Word High School Sanchez Mira.

Data Gathering Procedure

At first, the researcher looked for necessary resources that could help her in this

study. She did an intensive reading from the internet and asked opinions from her friends

and teachers. From these, she was able to construct ideas and questions for the

questionnaire.

A questionnaire was prepared and was submitted to the Practical Research teacher

for the approval of producing and distributing the questionnaire.

After checking and approving, the researcher produced 15 copies of the same

questionnaire with a letter requesting permission from the respondents to be a part of the

study. The questionnaires were then distributed randomly.

Data Gathering Tools

The tool used in data gathering is a questionnaire essay type. The questionnaire

was the primary tool on the gathering of data. It was given to know the perception of the

respondents on the subject.

DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 9

Treatment of the Data

The answers of the respondents were carefully tallied, tabulated, and organized. The

data were well presented, analyzed and interpreted.

For percentage calculation:

Chapter 5

CONCLUSIONS

Based from the presented results and findings in the discussion of the study, the

following conclusions are derived:

1. Using the different social media accounts are prevalent, and that the students

are not over-using the different popular social media.

2. The study habits of the students are slightly affected by over-using the social

media; however these are seen as a good learning tool in a way that they gain

more information by using these applications.

DIVINE WORD HIGH SCHOOL SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN 15

Chapter 6

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the given conclusions, the following are being recommended:

1. Students should limit more themselves in using the social media.

2. Students should know that not all they see or read in social media are good or

will help them.

3. Students should know the consequences they might get from over-using the

social media.

4. Students should know their responsibilities when over-using the social media.

5. Parents should watch and guide their children as to how they react or change

through over-using the social media.
