This paper will focus on Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence-Based Practice from the
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Baccalaureate Essentials. The Essentials relates
to my paper An Analysis of the Efficacy of Hand Hygiene and Alternatives Useful to the Practice by
showing that I have an understanding of the framework from AACN, and that I have an understanding
of it based on my paper.
Baccalaureate nursing education is predicated and grounded in evidence-based practice.
Evidence-based practice provides a systematic approach within the field of nursing that allows for the
proper evaluation and application of scientific evidence (AACN, 2008, p. 16). In other words, it
withstands the scrutiny of scientific rigor by testing the evidence against the general framework of
theory, practice, and research (AACN, 2008, p. 17). This general framework of theory, practice,
and research includes the proper identification of practice issues appraisal and integration of
evidence and evaluation of outcomes (AACN, 2008, p. 16). We can see that the correct evaluation
of outcomes is necessary over time as this becomes the foundation that is contingent for the
dissemination of best-practices (AACN, 2008, p. 16-17). This understanding of evidence-based
practice for the baccalaureate nurse then serves as the foundation for more complex applications at the
graduate level (AACN, 2008, p. 17). Within this foundation is the implication that baccalaureate
nurses should be simultaneously capable of making clinical judgments adhering to legal and ethical
research codes while also safeguarding the rights of patients (AACN, 2008, p. 17).
The previous paragraph establishes the need for scholarly evidence-based practice in the field of
nursing. In my analytical paper, I discussed the efficacy of hand hygiene and alternative methods.
Here I will show how my analytical paper and the topic of hand hygiene demonstrate the principles
within evidence-based practice as theory, practice, and research (AACN, 2008, p. 17). In my
analytical paper, I began by identifying the topic and research question. Here is it necessary to state
ESSENTIAL III: SCHOLARSHIP FOR EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE 3
that the identification of the topic and research question itself, as theory, was predicated and contingent
on prior practice and research that is, that it was background knowledge from my understanding as a
registered nurse that I gained from both experience and research, which was then fully fleshed out in
research with this assignment. From this epistemological point, I moved into a more rigorous research
approach by evaluating the credibility of [the] sources of information, including but not limited to
databases and Internet resources by comparing the literature I found in databases and the strength of
the evidence in the literature (AACN, 2008, p. 17). After scientific examination, I made my
conclusion.
