General Learner Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems.
Outcome(s)
Develop number sense
1. Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (two to four elements) by:
describing
Specific Learner reproducing
Outcome(s) extending
creating
Represent and describe numbers to 20, concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
Students will be able to:
Learning
1) Extend repeating patterns (two to four elements)
Objectives
2) Create two to four element repeating patterns
3) Represent number to 20 symbolically
Objective #1 Collect students pattern worksheets and students should be able to
continue a pattern.
Evidence
Objective #2 - Collect students Christmas lightbulb patterns and students should
(formative
have created three different patterns.
assessment)
Objective #3 Observe students during Christmas ten frame matching and
students should be able to match the correct ten frame with the correct number 0
to 20.

The kindergarten Connection for Playdough to Plato
Introduction - Read How Big is a Million?
(15 min) - Ask for volunteers to estimate how many penguins and snowflakes there are
- Need volunteers to open the poster at the back of the book
- We are going to have math Olympics this morning! We have 4 different centers of
math fun that we will rotate through
Christmas ten frame matching
Pattern worksheets
Bell Work- patterns
Painting patterns
- Who can tell me what a pattern is? A pattern is something that repeats.
- Explain Every center
- Transition Details
o 15 minute rotations
o Clap and explain where each table is rotating
Ten frame Christmas -
- Teacher Actions
oAt the carpet, explain to students how to match the Christmas trees with the
ornaments with the matching 10 frame pictured on it.
oHave some student volunteers that raised their hand, look at the example 10
Center #1
frame and say what tree they would match the ornament with
(15 min)
oAfter, ask the class how many ten and how many ones does the ten frames
have?
oContinue with a couple examples until students are correctly giving the
answers
oExplain that this will be one of the centers during math
Pattern Worksheets -
Center #2 - Teacher Actions
(15 min) o Show students the worksheets and explain each one
o If students finish early, have them colour the patterns on the last two pages
Finger Painting Christmas light patterns
- Teacher Actions
o Show example patterns and ask students how many colours I used and what
the pattern is
o There are three different lines and I want you to do three different patterns
Center #3 of different lengths, 2,3 and 4.
(15 min) o Demonstrate to students how to dip their finger in the paint and make a
finger print
o Explain that the most effective way to make a pattern is by using one colour
and then going to the next because that way you not constantly washing your
finger
o Before they start their painting, I want them to verbalize their pattern
The book was very fun and the students were very excited when we got to
take out the poster to show what one million looks like. It works on students
Reflection estimating skills and scales how big 10, 100, 1000 and a million really is. The
Christmas 10 frame matching center was a good in dependent station. Students
took some individual frames while some worked together. For the Christmas
lightbulb finger painting, I should have had the students colour in their circles
with pencil crayon first and had me approve that the pattern was correct before
finger painting. It was very messy and students were messing up their patterns.
The finger printing also took a very long time because most students were
washing their finger every finger print. The pattern work sheet was easy for
students to understand and fill out.
