Turning Tool Nose Radius Compensation

The document discusses two methods for applying tool nose radius compensation in PartMaker turning operations. It can either output toolpath geometry with no compensation codes, requiring it to be handled in the control, or offset toolpaths and output compensation codes. It provides details on the software settings and how it determines which approach to use.

PartMaker® Tech Note #080805:

Applying Turning Tool Nose Radius

Compensation in PartMaker
The following methods apply to PartMaker Turn, TurnMill, and SwissCAM. There are
two methods in PartMaker where Tool Nose Compensation can be implemented.

Option A:
The software will output the part shape geometry (print geometry) and tool nose
compensation G-codes in your NC file. This is used when you have your tool
geometry entered on your control.

Option B:
It will also output toolpath geometry (center of nose radius) and no tool nose
compensation G-codes. This is used when you have no geometry in you control
and want PartMaker to compensate for the nose radius in the tool database.

If Apply Compensation in PartMaker is checked on (Figure 1):

1) PartMaker will always offset the tool path by the tool nose radius specified in
the tool database to output tool path points in the NC file.

2) The software will automatically set all of the Nose Radius Compensation to
NONE for all operations. Thus, it will not default to post out a G-code nose
radius compensation call in the NC file (G41/G42 is common), unless otherwise
specified by the user by selecting RIGHT or LEFT as shown in Figure 2.

If Apply Compensation in PartMaker is NOT checked on (Figure 1):

1) PartMaker will always output the part shape points. It will be the responsibility
of the programmer to have his nose radius offsets on his machine.

2) The software will automatically set all of the Nose Radius Compensation to
LEFT or RIGHT for all finishing operations in the Process Parameters window on
the process table. Thus, it will post out a G-code tool nose compensation call in
the NC file (G41/G42 is common), unless otherwise specified by the user by
selecting NONE as shown in Figure 2.

*PartMaker will always “Apply compensation in PartMaker” to a roughing path

and default to NONE for nose radius compensation in the Process Parameters
window on the process table.

Setting Nose Radius Compensation in a Process Parameters Dialog

Version 7 and above will automatically set these on the process table based on your input
to the Apply Comp in PartMaker check box. The user has an option to choose a different
option for a specific process if he chooses to do so in the area shown in the Process
Parameters Dialog Box(Figure 2).

If none is applied:
No G-code tool nose radius compensation will be posted in the NC file.

If left is applied:
A G-code tool nose radius compensation will be posted for right handed
compensation in the NC file (commonly G41).

If right is applied:
A G-code tool nose radius compensation will be posted for left handed
compensation in the NC file (commonly G42).
