Chapter 1 Notes

The document discusses acid-base chemistry concepts including: 1) Acids are proton/H+ donors that increase the H+ concentration in aqueous solutions, while bases are proton/H+ acceptors that increase the OH- concentration. 2) Water can act as both an acid and a base due to its amphiprotic properties - it can donate or accept protons in chemical reactions. 3) The ion product of water relates the concentrations of H+ and OH- ions in water and is used to calculate pH and pOH.

Chapter 1

Acid & Bases

Uncle Arrhenius Uncle Bronsted/ Lowry

Acid ↑ [H+] in aqueous solution Proton/ H+ donor

Bases ↑ [OH-] in aqueous solution Proton/ H+ acceptor

Example HCl + H2O → H3O+/ H+ + Cl-

Accept H+
Donate H+
NaOH (aq) → Na + OH
+ -
Amphiprotic properties of H2O

Acid Base

Yoink

∴ Water can act as both acid and base

Ion product of water (Formula to calculate pH)

Way to calculate [ ]/ concentration

Way to calculate pH

[H+][OH-] = 1 x 10-14
Log [H+] + Log [OH-] = log 1 x 10-14
14
- Log [H+] - Log [OH-] = -14

pH = - Log [H+] pOH = - Log [OH-]

pH + pOH = 14

To antilog the log

Antilog(-log)
pH = - Log [H+] cannot be antilog
-pH = Log [H+]
10-pH = 10log [H+]
10-pH = [H+]
