Experiment No. 1 Batteries: Adamson University College of Engineering Electrical Engineering Department

The document summarizes an electrical engineering experiment on batteries. The experiment involved measuring the voltage of batteries in series and parallel configurations using a multimeter and observing the brightness of LED lights. Key results showed that batteries in series provided more voltage and brighter LED lighting, while parallel batteries supplied constant voltage throughout the circuit. The conclusion was that series circuits provide higher voltage while parallel circuits allow greater current flow. It was recommended to arrange circuits in series for higher voltage and parallel for increased current.

EXPERIMENT NO. 1
BATTERIES

Date Performed: December 04, 2015

Date Submitted: December 11, 2015

Schedule: Friday / 10:30 - 13:30

Group No: 4

Guibelondo, Heinz Hayle M.

SET-UP and PROCEDURE

The group inserted the MODULE DL 3155E01 in the console and

turned the switch ON. As shown in the diagram in the, the multi-meter is
connected and set as DC voltmeter shown in the diagram

We measured the total voltage and pushed and released the push
button S1 by verifying the switching on and off of the red LED light. We
observed the brightness of the LED by keeping the push-button S1 pushed
and releasing it and move the multi-meter. Setting the voltmeter as DC, we
adjusted the variable voltage +V so to have zero volt between the points A
and B and removing the multi-meter when the reading is approximately
zero and by using the connecting wire, we connected the points A and B
and push the push-button S2. While doing it, we observed the brightness of
the LED with the 2 parallel batteries. Comparing the configuration of the
series batteries and we commented on the results. After that, we removed
the multi-meter and set as DC voltmeter and performed the second circuit
of the module and adjusted the variable voltage +V to +5 Vdc. Using the
connecting wires, we connected the points C and D and by switching the
module on, the green and yellow LED will not glow. By increasing the
variable voltage +V gradually until 10 Vdc and observe the conduction and
the switching on, even gradual, of the yellow LED.

Decreasing the variable +V until 5 Vdc where none of the two

LEDs glow and we decreased the +V again until 0 Vdc is obtained and
observed it by gradually switching on of the green LED. Repeat the
previous operation by replacing, but instead of point C and D, set the
multi-meter as DC milliammeter with the positive terminal connected to
the + of the +V and vary +V between 0 and 10 Vdc.
DATA AND RESULTS

Procedure No. 3: Measure the total voltage UT;

- UT = 10.31 V

Procedure No. 5: Observe the brightness of the led by keeping the

push-button S1 pushed;

- The red led light is glowing brightly.

Procedure No. 9: Observe the brightness of the same red led with
2 parallel batteries;

- The red led light glows but not as bright as done in the
procedure no. 5.

Procedure No. 10: Compare with the configuration of the two

series batteries and comment on the results.

- The configuration in first series batteries, the led glows

brighter while at the configuration in second series batteries,
the led glows dimmer than the first.

Procedure No. 13: Observe that none of the two leds (yellow and
green) switched on;

- When the switch is turned on, it is expected that the yellow

and green led lights will not glow and so it does.

Procedure No. 14: Gradually increase the variable voltage +V

until 10 Vdc and observe the conduction and the switching on,
even gradual, of the yellow led;
- As the voltage is being increased to 10Vdc, the yellow led is
expected to glow but it did not switched on.

Procedure No. 16: Decrease +V again until 0 Vdc and observe the
conduction and the gradual switching on of the green led;

- As the voltage is being decreased to 0Vdc, the green led is

expected to to switch on but in conducting the experiment,
the green led did not switch on.
ANALYSIS
Upon analyzing the experiment, the batteries that are
arranged in series provides more voltage through the circuit by
pressing the switch. We know that when arranged in series, all
power sources available through the circuit will be added and
will serve as the total voltage. Pressing the switch will close the
circuit and will let the led glow brightly. In parallel, the voltage is
constant throughout the circuit. The switch here acts as the one
who opens and closes the circuit.

In the second experiment, the group a connected cable to

open the circuit and that is why now it became a closed circuit.
Two leds can be seen in the circuit (green and yellow) that are
arranged in parallel but in both different polarities. When
adjusting the variable voltage, it sends voltage to the yellow led
while the green is not accepting due to different polarities and
that is why both leds are not glowing.

CONCLUSION
Therefore, I conclude that batteries arranged in series
circuit provides more voltage and makes the red led glows
brightly and when in parallel, the voltage is constant
throughout the circuit. Second, the variable voltage is
manipulating the current of the circuit that’s why increasing and
decreasing it lit up the LED light respectively.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend in this kind of experiment, the circuit must arrange
in series connection to have a higher supply of voltage and the
circuit must arrange in a parallel connection to have a greater
flow of current in the circuit.
