Cubase 5 Crashes When Opening Particular Project

The document discusses solutions for Cubase crashes that occur when opening particular projects or exporting audio. Renaming the VST plugin folders can allow projects to open without crashes in many cases. This prevents Cubase from loading problematic plugins. The posts also provide instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling wrapper software like Automap to resolve issues caused by specific wrapped plugins.

Cubase 5 crashes when opening particular project

(Jazzbazz original post) These crashes on startup or export are almost always
plugin or virtual instrument related.

Rename the vst plugins folder (to something like "vst plugins - off") and open the
project. 99% of the time it will open now telling you that plugins are missing.

Look for suspicious plugs that you could disable in the project, such as newly
installed programs, updates, freeware etc. Take those plugins out of the channel
and save the project under a new name. Close Cubase and rename the vst plugins
folder back to the original name and remove offending plugs.

Chances are that your project will open now without a hitch. This has worked for
me repeatedly.

(Reply) I can confirm that I had this problem and tried this also. The tip of Jazzbazz is working!
You just have to do it right. Thank you Jazzbazz, I registered especially to thank you a ton for
saving my killer project.

And at the same time helping future producers and beatcreators with this problem. Renaming
your VSTplugin folders on program files (x86) (32-bit) and the program files (64-bit). So there is 2
maps when you run 64 bit OS (common in this time @2014). Rename them both by doing the
following.

VSTplugins => rename => _VSTplugins

Then you create a new map and call this VSTplugins on both locations.
Restart, it will not find any plugin or fX but you have all your recordings and midifiles back as they
where. Try to rule out the plugins that you think might cause this crash. Can make changes and
save with CTRL + SHIFT + S so it auto_increment with a number behind your song so you make
a new save every time. You can keep doing this until you find the troubled plugin.

Hope it helps some other people here!

CUBASE CRASHES ON QUITTING THE APPLICATION

Problem
If Cubase crashes on closing, in some cases it is caused by a third party plug-in but
in some other cases it is caused by Automap (Novation) wrapped plug-ins.

Solution

1.Uninstall Automap

2. Delete the Cubase AutomapClient.dll should be installed in the following

location;

Windows 32-bits:
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase\Components
Windows 64-bits:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\Cubase\Components

3. Manually delete all of the wrapped plug-ins [pluginname](automap).dll from both

the 64-bit VST folders and 32-bit VST folders to solve this issue. On Windows 7
these folders are usually located here:

VST2 Windows 32-bits:

C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase 6\VSTPlugins
C:\Program Files\Common Files\(Manufacturer name)

VST2 Windows 64-bits:

C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase 6\VSTPlugins
C:\Program Files\Common Files\(Manufacturer name)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugins
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\Cubase 6\VSTPlugins
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\(Manufacturer name)

VST3 Windows 32-bits:

C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase 6\VST3
C:\Program Files\Common Files\vst3\(Manufacturer name)\(Plug-in)

VST3 Windows 64-bits:

C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase 6\VST3
C:\Program Files\Common Files\vst3\(Manufacturer name)\(Plug-in)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\Cubase 6\VST3
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\vst3\(Manufacturer name)\(Plug-in)

4. Reinstall the Automap 4.4 beta 4 (or later) then re-register all of your plug-ins
and create new [pluginname](automap).dll files.

After uninstalling and reinstalling, the problem should be resolved.

Please be aware that even after following the above steps, the instability problems
when exiting Cubase will immediately reappear as soon as you install a new plug-in
and re-wrap it using Automap 4 setup. To avoid that, please run through the above
steps each time you want to add a new plug-in to Automap.

As an additional suggestion you might want to untick "Follow on screen Plug-In

where possible" in Automap preferences too. There is an issue in Automap that
causes Cubase 6.5 and above to crash when switching between multiple wrapped
VSTs.
