Murlidhar Devdas Amte, better known as Baba Amte, was educated to be a lawyer but had a change of heart after seeing a leper living in a ditch. [1] He took the leper home and began devoting himself to serving the poor and sick. [2] In 1949 he gave up legal practice and took training in treating leprosy in Calcutta, then founded Anandvan township near Nagpur in 1950 to help leprosy patients. [3] The number of patients has risen from a handful to over two thousand.

phones are a big help but these can become bad and harmful if used unwisely. For

as well as parent’s hard-earned money. No doubt, mobile phones are a blessing, but
only if used judiciously. It all depends how we use our mobiles. It is in our own hands
to make it a boon or a bane.

Murlidhar Devdas Amte, better known as Baba Amte, was educated to be a


lawyer. One day, when he was quite young, a fierce tiger attacked him in the
forest. But he was not afraid and somehow managed to escape. He was very
proud of the courage he had shown until the day he saw a leper living in ditch. He
felt afraid to touch him and help him. It was then he realized that he was not
really brave person. What courage could he claim to have when he couldn`t help
a fellow human being? Amte took the leper home and treated him. This
experience brought about a drastic change in his life. He now began to devote
himself to the service of the poor and the sick.
Amte gave up legal practice in 1949.He took training in Calcutta in the treatment
of leprosy. He then founded Anandvan, ‘the forest of joy’, a township near Nagpur
in 1950. There is now new hope for leprosy patient. From just a handful of
patients in 1950 the number has gradually risen to over two thousand.
