Introduction
Background of the Study
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Who doesn’t
love ice cream? During a hot weather, especially in tropical countries
like the Philippines where it’s usually very hot, it could be a great excuse
for everyone to cool down with a cold and delicious ice cream. Ice
creams are something to be considered as a versatile dessert or snack,
with a pleasing, creamy, and a taste where it could be eaten in all seasons
either day, night, hot and cold weathers alike, to quench a craving or as
said, to cool down.
Ice cream is a sweet, frozen food that could be eaten as a snack or
dessert. Wine is a popular alcoholic beverage made from grapes with the
use of fermentation. Put those two together and you’ll get a wine ice
cream. Apparently, wine ice cream has been an underrated flavor.
According to Leah Hyslop's article on The Telegraph, the owner of a dairy
farm in New York called Mercer's Dairy first had the idea of making a
wine ice cream when she saw her guests start to add ice creams into their
wines at a food event.
The idea of making a wine ice cream is to satisfy people’s guilty
pleasures. It gives wine lovers a new way to enjoy their wine, and give
ice cream lovers a new way to enjoy their favorite treat as well. The
makers thought it would be great if people can enjoy both of their
favorites at once and eventually taste something different once in a
while with all these common ice cream flavors. A lot of people might be
interested to try this flavor out since it’s a combination of two substances
they like. And this is not suitable for kids, as it could get you intoxicated
if you eat enough, depending on your alcohol tolerance as well.
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of how the flavor
of wine coincides with ice cream through the following questions:
a) Would it be flavorful if the content of the sugar is reduced to
overcome the taste of the wine;
b) In the use of different types of sugar, which works best, brown or
white sugar?
Significance of the Study
The research team’s investigatory project is very important to
people who has unusual fondness for wines and would love it as a flavor
for an ice cream. Although, it may not be suitable for all ages as it could
get you intoxicated.
This research proves that you can make your love for wines and ice
cream a dream come true and make it by yourself; this is also done to
prove that any wine of your preference made into a flavor for the ice
cream is possible.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of the study includes the time & money spent, the
materials, tools, or equipment and techniques used, and the number of
personnel needed to conduct this experiment.
The estimated time range of the experiment from the mixing of the
ingredients to blending would be 25 to 30 minutes.
The general budget of this experiment ranges from ___ to ____
depending on the type of wine used in this experiment.
The tools needed for this experiment would be anything that could
be used to mix ingredients (like spoon, spatula, etc.), scissors for opening
the ingredients. The only equipment used is a blender.
Techniques used for this experiment only includes blending using
the blender and a little bit of mixing.
This experiment can be conducted by one person only as it is very
easy.
This study is limited only to the blending of the said ingredients and
putting in the freezer to freeze. Its limitations are events and things that
are outside the scope of this study.
CHAPTER II
Review of Literature and Conceptual Framework
Review of Literature
Wine and ice cream are really two different things yet its more
unorthodox to make an ice cream flavored wine. It may be unusual but
the part where it is unusual makes the people think that consuming
something as interesting like an ice cream flavored wine is worth a try.
The wine ice cream has the signature taste of sour fermented
grapes and a climaxing yet a confusing taste of sweetness combined with
the soft and creamy texture of the cream when in the mouth makes it
unfathomably satisfying to taste. It is healthy because of the grapes that
contain a lot of minerals and antioxidants while the cream is rich in
lactose and with its savory content both alike coincide with their
naturally made advantages as an odd yet healthy.
Conceptual Framework
Inputs
-
Hypothesis
1. The outcome would taste too sweet.
2. The taste of the wine is dominant over the cream and sugar.
3. The smell of the wine would be dominant over the cream and
sugar.
Definition of Terms
Versatile: capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another
of various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc.
Unorthodox: contrary to what is usual, traditional, or accepted; not
orthodox.
Fondness: affection or liking for someone or something.
Sherbet: a frozen dessert made with fruit juice added to milk or cream,
egg white, or gelatin.
Climaxing: culminate in an exciting or impressive event; reach a climax.
Unfathomable: incapable of being fully explored or understood.
Antioxidants: a substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to
counteract the deterioration of stored food products.
Chapter III
Materials
1. Wine (any wine of your choice)
2. Chilled All Purpose Cream
3. Sugar
4. Mixing Bowl (and any mixing tool like spoon)
5. Cornstarch
6. Powdered Milk
7. Blender
Procedure
1. Place the cream, wine, sugar, and powdered milk in a mixing
bowl and mix.
2. Pre-heat cornstarch until dissolved.
3. Add cooked cornstarch to the ice cream mixture.
4. Blend for about 15 minutes using blender.
5. Freeze for 10 hours or so.
The graph states that if you make your own wine-flavored ice cream, it
would give you a big advantage on the expenses. Based on our research,
there are no wine-flavored ice cream in the Philippines, therefore if you
buy the actual product, you’d have to pay for a shipping fee as well.
Unlike the home-made one, you can just buy the ingredients on your
local convenience stores and even get to choose the cheapest to save
more money.
Chapter IV
Results and Findings
Based on our experiment and the results, the researchers have found
out that it possible to make ice cream out of wine while still retaining
the sweetness of the frozen dessert. With this home-made ice cream,
you can still have a comparable taste to the imported ones (that is if
you buy the exact same flavor of the wine) yet this research has proven
that it is much more convenient and cheaper compared to when you
order from other countries.
The researchers state that if you choose to do this home-made wine ice
cream, you can save time, money, and it will let you have a better
options on the flavoring depending on your preferences.
Chapter V
Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations
Summary
The findings are summed up as follows:
a)
Conclusion
Therefore, the research team concludes that eating a 20ml. wine
flavored ice cream could get you intoxicated. It contains a low alcohol
content of 5% and isn’t a common alcoholic beverage such as beer or
whisky nor it is unhealthy to the consumer’s body. Making such a thing
is affordable when done manually than buying something that isn’t yet
available in our country.
Recommendation
The research team recommends people who love both wine and
ice cream to use the information we gave to the make home-made ice
cream. By this way, people would be able to experience manually making
the ice cream, and if they like the results, they could make a small
business out of it.
