O-Ring Terminology & Definitions

This document defines terminology and terms related to O-rings and their housings. It defines key terms like actual inside diameter, cross section diameter, and housing dimensions. Figures are provided to illustrate typical piston, piston rod, and axial O-ring housings. Appendices describe approved methods for measuring the inside diameter and cross section diameter of O-rings. This standard is Part 4 of the Indian series on specifications for O-rings.

SP,ECIFICATION FOR ‘0’-RINGS

PART 4 TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. Scope - Covers terminology and definition of terms for ‘O.-rings and their housings for reciprocat-
ng and static purposes.
2. Terminology - For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply.
2.1 Actual /nside Diameter ( dI) (see Fig. 1 ) - This is the nominal inside diameter of the ‘0’-ring
(*
n
measured using a tapered plug gauge as illustrated in Appendix A.
d
2.2 Cross Section Diameter ( d2) ( see Fig. 1 ) - This is the diameter of ‘O’-ring cross section
a
u measured as given in Appendix B.

2.3 ‘O’- Ring Housing

2.3.1 Piston housing - Figure 2 illustrates a typical ‘O’-ring housing for piston ( cylinder-bore )
applications.

2.3.3 Axial housing - Figures 4A and 48 illustrate a typical ‘O’-ring housing for axial (face )
applications.

applications respectively.

2.4 ‘O’-Ring Housing Dimensions - Nomenclature:

d3 ‘O’-ring housing inside diameter ( piston seal groove diameter )

da Cylinder-bore diameter
dg Piston diameter

ds ‘0’-ring housing - outside diameter ( piston rod, ‘O’-ring groove diameter )

dv Gland diameter

d, Piston-rod diameter

bl ‘0’-ring housing width ( piston and piston rod sealing )

ti ‘O.-ring housing radial depth ( piston and piston rod sealing )

de Outside diameter-axial application, internal pressure

dlo Inside diameter-axial application, external pressure

bz ‘O’-ring housing width ( axial sealing )

tr ‘O’-ring housing depth ( axial sealing )

.
0, r, Corner and Edge radii.

2.4.1 Diametral clearance ( C) - This is the clearance measured diametrically between piston end
cylinder.

2.4.2 Lead in chamfer (Z) - This is the length of the lead in chamfer of piston or cylinder.
A chamfer angle of 15” to 20” is given to prevent damage to the ‘0’-ring on assembly either by piston
rod or into the cylinder-bore.

APPENDIX A
( Clause 2.1 )

METHOD OF MEASUREMENT FOR CHECKING THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF ‘O’-RING

A-l. The tapered plug gauge will have ‘GO’, ‘NOMINAL’ and ‘NO GO’ marking corresponding to
minimum permissible limit, nominal dimension and maximum permissible limit of inside diameter of
‘O’-ring under inspection as shown in Fig. 5.

FIG. 5
IS : 9975 (- Part 4 ) - 1984

A-2. The gauge shall be used vertically so that the ‘O’-ring may be passed over the small diameter
( ‘go’ dimension ) end from above. The ‘O’-ring shall be guided with gentle two fingered control,
until it is stopped on reaching the point at which its diameter is equal to the internal diameter of the
‘0’-ring. If the position of the ‘O.-ring in line with the lower edge is between ‘GO’ and ‘NO GO’
markings, that is, in the nominal portion, the ring can be acceptable.

APPENDIX B
( Clause 2.2 )

MEASUREMENT OF DIAMETER OF ‘0’-RING CROSS SECTION

B-l. Cross section diameter ‘d:’ shall be measured with a snap gauge or any other similar instrument
which exerts a force of not more than 0’4 N on the rubber surface ( or a pressure of 21 KN!‘m’).
