Spotlight : David Cohn
David Cohn was born outside of Milwaukee in Glendale, WI. Cohn?s
October
first sports internship opportunity came as a member of the ticket
sales department for the Milwaukee Bucks while he was still in high
school. He described his experience there more as a
?jack-of-all-trades? on top of gaining sales experience.
Cohn began college as a freshman at the at University of
Indiana-Bloomington. He had originally considered UW-Madison as
well, however, Wisconsin?s lack of a sports management program is
what ultimately brought him to Bloomington instead, given that
Indiana did in fact offer this track. During his first year in
Bloomington, Cohn quickly realized that Indiana?s program
instituted a larger focus on sports science, such as nutrition and
fitness rather than business or finance.
He then returned to his home state as a transfer student to the
University of Wisconsin. In the summers before and after his junior
year at Wisconsin, Cohn became involved as an intern with the
Wisconsin PGA Junior Foundation. As a student at UW, Cohn also
joined the university?s Athletic Department staff as an intern for David Coh n
both his junior and senior year. Executive Director at The First Tee
After multiple visits to a chapter of the Sports Entertainment of Southeast Wisconsin
& Marketing Experience (SEME) which was previously hosted

at Northwestern University, Cohn soon realized he was the only
student in attendance from UW-Madison, despite the campus? UW Class of : 2008
close proximity. Upon a similar observation, an event staff member

inspired him to consider, and eventually found the Sports Business
Club at Wisconsin along with a handful of fellow interns from the Residen ce: Milwaukee, WI
Athletic Department during Cohn?s senior year.
Advice f or SBC M em ber s: Use the title of student to your benefit. I'd be willing to take a call from anybody in
the club right now to have a 15-minute conversation about anything that they want because they are a
student, but I'm more hesitant to take that ask from some random person. Find those people that you want
to talk with, reach out to them and ask for 5-10 minutes of their time because it will never just be 5 minutes.

Spotlight Interview: David Cohn 2017
Wh at w as you r f avor it e SBCUW m em or y?
Watching how much the club grew in its first year, and working out the club's first Milwaukee Brewers trip.

The 1996 Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots, with my Dad. That was
one of my first major sports memories.

Barry Alvarez then, and Roger Goodell now.
Wh at do you t h in k w ill be t h e m ost lu cr at ive ar ea of spor t s bu sin ess in 10 year s?
I don't think it's eSports. I think it will interesting to see how the landscape of college sports changes over the
next 20 years with some of the concepts around amateurism and TV contracts.
Wh o w as t h e m ost im pact f u l per son or m en t or on you r car eer sin ce you w er e a par t of SBCUW?
I'd certainly have to give a shout-out to Adam Ahearn with the Athletic Department. He was my boss when I
was an intern, and he's turned into a close personal friend as someone who I can always bounce an idea off.
Wh at ?s on e t h in g you lik e t o see ou t of SBCUW in t h e f u t u r e?
I think it's this, the alumni engagement. Every year that goes by that the club isn't connecting with the club
members who graduate is another year that's more difficult to reconnect and bring them back into the fold.
If you h ad t o con vin ce a pr ospect ive st u den t t o join SBCUW, w h at w ou ld you r pit ch be n ow ?
I would certainly tell people is to showcase different opportunities and career paths to working in the sports
industry, but also highlight some of the real work that's done in the fact that not everything is as glamorous as
it may seem. You do work long hours, there are entry level positions and you may never actually see a piece of
the game-day experience depending on what your role may be and the goal of the club is to allow members to
experience that beforehand and gain the best possible feel for if they want to pursue that career further.

I wish I could say yes, but I just really don't think that they will. One loss (12-1), and I think it's going to come in
the Big Ten championship game.

Halftime Ice Bubble Hockey 2017
Thanks in part to the club's executive board connections with the
University of Wisconsin Athletic Department, six SBCUW members were
able to suit up and take the Kohl Center Ice for a game of Ice Bubble
Hockey as the halftime entertainment of the Badger men's hockey team's
4-2 win over St. Lawrence on Friday, October 27th.
