Influence of Mathematics in Carpentry: Objective
Influence of Mathematics in Carpentry: Objective
ABSTRACT
The study intended to know how informal education ascertains mathematical requirement in
carpentry. For this study the investigator conducted a survey among 10 carpenters of
Panachikkadu Panchayath. A questionnaire were used as the sample. Results of the study
revealed that 30% people know the concepts of mathematics like geometry and arithmetic. Since
majority among them have informal education, they completed their formal education at the high
school level. This highlights the need to increase and solidify the basic math skills of high school
students.
INTRODUCTION
Mathematics affects every single part of our daily lives everyday. Ancient civilizations
infused geometric shapes into buildings and we continue to do so in modern architecture.Math is
used extensively for many different aspects of carpentry. Some of the types of mathematics used
include basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, algebra and
geometry.Constructing a solid piece of furniture a level counter top, or a comfortable room with
plumb walls requires many different math skills. A good carpenter will have a strong
understanding of general mathematics, measurements and geometry.
The study is conducted to check how informal education ascertains the mathematical
requirement of local architectural work.
OBJECTIVE
Only 20% of carpenters agree with the requirement of mathematics in their work. Other 70%
people says only the basic knowledge is required. And only person says geometry is required for
their work. 30% people don’t know about the mathematical tools they used. They are not aware
about whether mathematics used in their tools.
50% people says mostly they used rectangle shape for furniture.2 people support for square
shape. All of them heard about meter scale but 50% people know why it is not widely used. Most
of them know they use standard sizes for their work and are able to say an example about that.
20% don’t know how to find the defects in work using math. Others are aware about it. Only
30% know which are the concept of mathematics and they answered as geometry and arithmetic
calculation.
Since the study is conducted among carpenters most of them have informal education. Majority
of respondents in the aforementioned study completed their formal education at the high school
level. Some of them don’t know about the mathematical concepts .They are not matriculates thus
they are not aware about how mathematics used in their work(carpentry). Most carpenters says
that only basic knowledge is required for their work.
CONCLUSION
Carpenters are involved with nearly all residential and commercial building projects, so it is
important that they have the math skills necessary to perform their duties and tasks. The majority
of respondents in the aforementioned study completed their formal education at the high school
level. This highlights the need to increase and solidify the basic math skills of high school
students. It is also recommended that high schools with carpentry related programs make sure
those students can perform such tasks as measuring spaces and materials, laying out walls, and
working from blueprints. In addition, they should make sure students in those programs are
comfortable with math skills involving basic arithmetic, fractions, angles, area and pitch in order
to better prepare them for future employment.
