Cooling System Draining and Filling

Note: Do not loosen the lower radiator drain cock plug while the engine and radiator are still
hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

Note: Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your
area.

1. Loosen the lower radiator drain cock plug (3).

2. Remove the radiator cap (1).
3. Loosen the cylinder block drain cock plug (4).
4. Install the lower radiator drain cock plug and allow the engine and radiator to drain correctly.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

5. Install the cylinder block drain cock plug.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (9 lb ft).

6. Loosen the upper radiator drain cock plug.

7. Slowly fill the radiator with DEX-COOL®.

Note: Never use water as a substitute for engine coolant.

Note: In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems,
only use DEX-COOL® or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine,
non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with

long-life hybrid organic acid technology consists of a combination of low phosphates and
organic acids).

8. Squeeze the inlet and outlet radiator hoses several times by hand and then check the level of
the coolant.

If the coolant level is low, add coolant.

9. Tighten the upper radiator drain cock plug.

10. Slowly pour coolant into the radiator reservoir tank until it reaches the FULL line.
11. Install the radiator cap sub-assembly and reservoir tank cap.
12. Start the engine and warm it up.
13. Bleed the air from the cooling system.
• Before starting the engine, turn the A/C switch off.
• Adjust the air conditioning temperature setting to MAX (HOT).
• Adjust the air conditioning blower setting to LO.

Note: Wear protective gloves. Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot. Keep your hands
away from the radiator fan.

14. Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens. While the thermostat is open, allow the
coolant to circulate for several minutes.

Thermostat opening timing can be determined by squeezing the inlet radiator hose and
sensing vibrations when the engine coolant starts to flow inside the hose.

15. Stop the engine and wait until the engine coolant cools down.
16. Add engine coolant to the FULL line on the radiator reservoir.
17. Inspect for coolant leaks.
