‘ROBERT KING MUSIC COMPANY NORTH EASTON, MASSACHUSETTSPreface
“Throughout the yearg, the performance of Bach chorales: has always been associated
. with brass instruments. Bach himself, in scoring his church cantatas, would frequently’ give
the accompaniment of the chorale sectiong to one cornett and three trombones. \ This same
combination was also the usual one for playing chorales from the fowers of those German
cities that supported. town musicians (Stadtpfelfér). This anciét practice of regular daily
performance of religious music remains a most worthy, custom easily adaptable to modern
Gpeete
By Bach's time, the repertoire of German chorale melodies was practically complete.
His contribution to the German chorale lies in his many masterful harmionizations of these .
old tunes many of which date back to Martin Luther. Luter in turn obtained them from
various sources. Some, as in the case of Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, were adapted
from Latin hymns. Others, like Christ lag in/Todesbanden, came from popular-hymne from
the period prior to the Reformation, Still others were taken {rom secular folksonge as in ie
cave of Herzlich thut mich verlangen. Besides these borrowings, a great many tunes were
mally, composed and a goodly number of these were written by Luther. himaelf, Such a
tune is Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, The source is given for the melody of each chorale
where it is known. The dates given in all cases indicate the first appearance of the melody
with a sacred text.
Dynamic markings are merély the suggestions of the editor. In addition to.the indicated
breathing places, breaths should be taken after each fermata and Before each new dynamic
mark. This will imsure good ensemble playing. For best sonority it is recommended that at
least four players be used on cach of the four parte. In most cases legato tonguing will be
found most effective in the playing of this music. In thie second edition, the scope of this
collection has been enlarged by making the alto part available for-cornet as well as horn and
by giving a horn substitute for the tenor. Also the lower octave has been added to the bass
making it playable by tubae where there is enough eonority above'to balance this.
