Hand-in Homework 4
Due Thurs 3/8/18
1. Differentiate each of the following functions:
a. f (x) = 34 x8 − 17ex + 103 − 3.7x4

b. g(x) = x4 ex + 5 x
c. h(x) = (−5x−2 + 2x)4ex

d. r(t) = (t + 3et )(5 − 3 t)
x+1
e. y = x3 +x−2

3x5 +4 x
f. f (x) = x
2x
2. Find the equation for the line tangent to the function g(x) = x−3 at x = 2
3. Given the following function:

−1 − 2x,
 if x < 1
2
h(x) = x , if −1 ≤ x ≤ 1

x, if x > 1

a. Find the interval(s) for which the h(x) is differentiable.

b. Find a formula for h0 (x).
c. Sketch the graphs of h(x) and h0 (x).

4. Draw a graph of the function f (x) = x2 + x. On the same set of axes, mark the point (2, −3).
How many lines can you draw that pass through the point (2, −3) and are tangent (at some
point) to the graph of f (x)? Find the equation for each of these tangent lines and determine
the point(s) at which they are tangent to the function f .
5. Find a second degree polynomial function, p(x), such that p(3) = 7, p0 (3) = 4 and p00 (3) = 1.
x−1
6. Find the equations for the lines that are tangent to the function h(x) = x+1 that are also
parallel to the line x − 2y = 2.
7. Suppose that f (−2) = 3, g(−2) = 4, f 0 (−2) = 2, and g 0 (−2) = 5. Find h0 (−2) given that
h(x) is defined as follows:

a. h(x) = −3f (x) + 7g(x)

b. h(x) = 5.4g(x)f (x)
f (x)
c. h(x) = g(x)+1

Challenge Problems:

1. If f (x) = exx , find f (n) (x). [Recall that f (n) (x) denotes the nth derivative of f (x) NOT f (x)
raised to the power n.]
2. If the function f (x) = x4 + ax3 + bx2 + cx + d (where a, b, c, and d are real numbers) has a
tangent line at x = 0 with the equation y = 2x + 1, and a tangent line at x = 1 with the
equation y = −3x + 2, find the values of a, b, c, and d.
