LESSON PLAN TITLE –Causes of WWII
DISCIPLINE / TOPIC – Social Studies/American History/The Causes of World War II
TARGET POPULATION
o Grade Level: -- Middle School-8th Grade
o Population Characteristics: -- 3 sections of 8th grade heterogeneously grouped. Two sections
have students with IEP and 504 plans, one section has ELL students.
o Lesson Groupings: -- Students will primarily be working in small groups with occasional
individual work being done.
CURRICULUM LINKS – This lesson introduces students to the major causes of WWII in Europe as
well as what brought the United States into the war. Prior to the lesson students will have studied
the Great Depression as well as the rise of dictators in Europe during the 1930’s. Following the
lesson students will study the details of WWII and it’s repercussions for the world.

OBJECTIVES –
Students will be able to explain, in detail, the major causes of World War Two and explain how each
led to a world war.
Students will be able to discuss, in detail, one major cause for World War Two and explain why this
cause was the most important or significant to the making of World War Two.

MATERIALS / TIME –
1-84 minute block, plus additional time at home for students to watch the video and complete the
quiz.
Set of 6 I pads for the classroom
QR codes to review each of the major causes for WWII, 1 copy for each group (6)
Essay outline and rubric for student review-Google Classroom
Student Chrome books with Internet access

SCOPE & SEQUENCE –
Online environment-
Students will complete this section at home (for homework). Students will watch the video with
details the major causes of WWII. As they watch, they are responsible for completing fill in the blank
notes. Students will take a quiz based on their understanding of the video immediately in class the
next day.

Classroom environment-
Bell Work-
Quiz based on video. Multiple choice quiz on a Google Form. This will provide immediate feedback
to me on what students retained from the video and notes.
Lesson Activities-
1. (30min.) In groups of 4, students will use the provided QR codes as well as the QR scanning
app (QR Reader) installed on the I-pads to review the major causes of WWII. They will be
instructed to review each but focus on the topics their group feels they don’t understand yet.
This will review the following:
a. Appeasement
b. Rise of dictators in Europe/Fascism
c. Failure of the Treaty of Versailles
d. Invasion of Poland (1939)
e. Pearl Harbor
2. Padlet creation-With the same group of 3-4 students will create a collaborative bulletin board
using the Padlet I-pad app. Students will collaborate to create a bulletin board showcasing
each of the five major causes for WWII mentioned above. Their Padlet should include
images (with citations), articles written by students to describe events, and links to other
websites (if appropriate). Groups will turn in their bulletin boards when finished.
3. Individual Practice-Students will individually determine which cause for WWII they believe
is the most important and write a paragraph using details and facts from the video, review,
and Padlet board creation to support their opinions. Each paragraph should include at least 2
details to support student opinion as well as a description of one other cause with an
explanation as to why it is not the most important.

EVALUATION OF THE LESSON – This lesson will be considered successful when students can
describe each major cause of WWII in detail through creating a Padlet and writing a detailed
paragraph describing one of the major causes.
