HEADSTART
With the English language now so firmly established as an international means of
‘communication, itis easy to forget that there are still absolute beginners in the world. Wi
wrongly assume that everyone must have some knowledge of the language.
(One result of this assumption is that many beginners’ course books these days are aimed
at false beginners. Headstart is designed for absolute beginners, and is a preparatory
course for Headway Elementary. Iti also suitable for students who have leamed a little
English but who don’t yet feel confident enough to move on. They want to go back
before they move forward.
Headstart has a clearly defined and limited grammatical syllabus. New language is
presented thoroughly in measured amounts. and in a logical order. Vocabulary has been
selected carefully to avoid overloading. There are many highly controlled practice
activities, which give beginners the confidence they need to proceed. There is also some
simple skills work, which incorporates manageable communicative activities despite the
low level. The final section of each unit is Everyday English, which deals with common
situations, functions, and survival language.
Headstart has its origins in a successful bilingual coursebook called Headfirst, which
was designed for German learners of English, and written by Briony Beaven. a ver
experienced EFL teacher and teacher trainer. Sylvia Wheeldon, of Oxford University
Press and editor of Headway Elementary, bas very skilfully adapted Headfirst for an
international market. She has reshaped a lot of the material, and has contributed new
exercises and activities to suit a monolingual edition, There is also a much-needed
Workbook. The result is a unique package at this much-neglected level.
We personally feel that Headstart breaks new ground by confronting realistically and
honestly the problems that beginners face, whilst at the same time drawing judiciously
on current methodologies and approaches.

Signor and Signora Volpe have a baker's shop in Tonda
in Italy, Tonda is a holiday village. There are a lot of
tourists in summer. The tourists live in holiday flats and
cook their meals. The tourists eat a lot of Italian bread.
In spring and autumn there aren’t usually many
tourists.
In winter itis cold and wet and there aren't any tourists.
Signor Volpe cleans the shop and Signora Volpe works
in the house and looks after her children.
But the Volpes don’t work all the winter. In winter they
are tourists. They go on holiday in February. And where
do you go on holiday if you live in a holiday village?ee
