The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of
Social Work; and aimed to create human service professionals to work with and enable people overcome
poverty, deprivation and unemployment. Today, the institute keeps this vision alive through its extensive
teaching, research, policy support, and field action programmes. TISS has received a consistently high
appreciation for academic excellence and is counted amongst the best universities in the country. The 3rd
cycle of assessment by National Assessment and Accreditation Commission (NAAC) rated TISS with a score
of 3.89/4.00; the second highest score amongst all universities accredited by the NAAC thus far; and
improving on the 2nd cycle score.
TISS was one of the earliest institutions to be recognised as an institution Deemed to be University in 1964
to further teaching and research in the inter-disciplinary areas of Social Sciences. TISS is a centrally funded
Public University, and the University Grants Commission (Government of India) provides the Institute’s Plan
and Maintenance Grants. It operates from four campuses located in Mumbai and Tuljapur in Maharashtra,
Guwahati and Hyderabad. Each campus is headed by a Deputy Director and has qualified Faculty, supportive
administration, infrastructure, impressive academic progammes and vibrant student communities. All the
campuses have major ongoing research projects, collaborations with the Governments, industry and civil
society organisations. It has over 4500 students on roll; with nearly one-fifth being Doctoral Scholars. TISS
has expanded its education, training, research and outreach activities in several states.
TISS continues to produce committed high quality human service professionals in a range of social and
human development sectors: health, mental health, social epidemiology, clinical psychology; education and
vocational skill development; human resources management, media and cultural studies, rural and urban
development, livelihoods and social entrepreneurship, climate change, disaster management, regulatory
governance, focused work on women, children, adolescents, youth, aged; disability studies; through over 50
post-graduate programmes, integrated M. Phil. – Ph. D. program on all these areas.
TISS has consistently worked for the promotion of sustainable and participatory development and creation of
a just and equitable society. TISS has been engaged in research, policy support, programme development and
evaluation, training, and advice on development interventions with the ministries and autonomous bodies of
Govt. of India; State Governments; bi-lateral and multi-lateral organisations; universities and institutions
across the world; the non-government sector, industry, businesses at the national and international levels; and
peoples’ groups and networks.
TISS seeks to appoint an eminent scholar with an outstanding track record in academic leadership for the
position of the Director equivalent to a Vice-Chancellor.
Requirements:
For consideration to the position of the Director / Vice-Chancellor, a person should be of Indian Origin and
shall have:
1. Experience as Professor for a minimum of ten years with an earned Doctorate degree or equivalent
qualification from a recognized University in India or abroad OR Professionals from other sectors
with a minimum of 10 years experience in an equivalent position;
2. At least ten years hands-on experience at senior levels in a large and complex University or
equivalent institution with demonstrable leadership, management capacity including knowledge of
financial management and strategic people management;
3. Strong and continued working relationship with Ministries and Departments at the Central and State
Governments in research, policy and program work, and as member of committees;
4. Demonstrated experience in networking and collaboration with bilateral and multilateral
organizations, business and industry, universities and institutions within and outside the country and
civil society organizations;
5. Demonstrated resource mobilization experience;
6. A proven track record of research and publications in peer reviewed journals, monographs, books
and projects.
Other desirable core competencies and skills expected for the position include:
1. Ability to portray and uphold positive national and institutional image and work in a multi-cultural
and multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity to and respect for diversity;
2. Being a visionary and result oriented person with excellent organizational, interpersonal and
communication skills;
3. Capacity to work under pressure and have firm, fair and transparent management ethics.
