CONCEPT STATEMENT
For Jenny Dunahue and her son William’s house, Art Nouveau would be her preferred
style, and it would be adaptable for William autistic condition, plus elegant and
economic. The emphasis would be on the soft lines. The colors selection would be a
natural, as whites, cream and sand colors, combined with textures like refined wood,
stones, grass and leaves, which would complement an earth hue. Most accents would
be floral motifs and plants. The style would be asymmetric, with lines and mosaics
lamps. The curved lines would be an excellent choice for Williams condition,
eliminating the risk of accidents and the color palette would create a calm
environment where he can feel relax and comfortable. Even though this style is
expensive, replicas and neutral objects would be mixed with Art Nouveau pieces to
create the perfect home for Jenny’s family.

elegant, appropriate for the Art Nouveau style

Codes Analysis
In this assignment I was able to learn a large amount of codes and standards that I was not
familiar with. The diversity on the building classification and points that are needed to comply
when involved in the building or remodeling process is significantly immense. This codes and
regulations are placed in place to avoid different scenarios in which people can get hurt. It also
helps the professionals to know how things were made, following the standards for every
structure instead of having to analyze and study every building separately. This codes give us the
rules of what can we or what can’t we do when designing a space, for example the fact that at
least one accessible route shall connect all spaces and elements that area part of the unit; this is
important in the case of a fire or emergency, the emergency services can have access to the
building and people in it. Another example of how these codes are helpful when we are
designing a space is the Artificial light; the artificial light shall be provided that is adequate to
provide an average illumination of 10 foot-candles (107 lux) over the area of the room at a height
of 30 inches above the floor level. Residential sprinklers are a great tool to prevent major
damages to lives and structures, in the event of fire, it can prevent the quick spread to another
units in the same building and save lives in it but it also can be a disadvantage in the case this
had a malfunction or get activated accidentally, this would damage the property and the objects
inside it. I think sprinklers shall be installed at the discretion of the owner. When talking about
8
Automatic Sprinklers and their requirement on residential buildings, it tells us that they are not
required inside de units but at least one unit is required in a portion of the building; this could be
stairways or hallways. This topic is very important since this could affect a life in the event of a
fire and risk lives. Not only would affect the resident’s life but also the rescuers life, it would
also affect the building safety causing major damages to the building and nearby buildings and
people.
Tennessee State adopted the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) and the 2006
International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Fire sprinkler systems are not required in one-
and two-family dwellings or townhouses. However, since townhouses are not required to be
sprinkled, they are required to be separated by 2 hour fire walls. The existing home will not be
required to be brought up to code; however, the addition must meet code. A state residential
building permit is not required for detached garages, sheds, barns or other detached structures
that are not used for living purposes; by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.

The lighting fixtures selected where designed to maintain the Art Nouveau style preferred by the client.
The details on the lighting fixtures are based on beautiful iron designs simulating branches and nature
complemented by glass. The main light fixtures were selected from the same collection to maintain the
balance and style. The colors used reflect the balance of the rough dark iron and the neutral delicate
beige in harmony with the colors selected for the furniture and drapery. The chandelier in the living
room would serve as a conversation piece for the visit, while the wall scones will help with the large
room illumination while maintaining the elegant style, art pictures can be added under them to
complement the style and environment, the Wide Island Chandelier above the entry table is a
convenient light for when the client arrives home can have some illumination, it will also contrast
perfectly with the mosaic wall behind it. The Track fixture in the office would be enough light to support
the office space, while the master bedroom ceiling fan is a must, this one will follow the house Art
Nouveau style that the client prefers.
