4. Project Details:
a. Theme and sub themes (Sub themes addressing local environment issues).
I. Theme : Swachh Bharat Mission, Ganga Rejuvenation and River Cleaning
II. Sub-Theme : Swachh Bharat (Domestic Hazardous Waste)
Item No. 4
Domestic Hazardous Waste: Segregation of Household waste, discarded bulbs,
tube-lights, medicines pesticides, paint & pesticides cans, infectious waste (bio-
medical waste from treatment of any patient at home), Batteries, electronic wastes,
sanitary napkins and diapers etc.
4
(Sub Themes should focus on the main theme)
b. Objectives of the Project:
Introduction:
The problem of Domestic Waste is drawing increasing attention of the people as huge
garbage is lying down uncollected beside the houses, drains, roads, patchy gaps, streets
dustbins and on the ground which is causing threat to the environment as well as
endangering the public health. This waste is generated as consequences of household
activities such as the cleaning, cooking, repairing empty containers, packaging, huge
use of plastic carry bags, extensive use of electronic items. There is no system of
segregation of organic, inorganic and recyclable wastes at the household level. The
consumers are mostly unaware of hazardous wastes generated in their premises that
threatens health consequences.
The improper handling and management of Domestic Waste from households are
causing adverse effect on the public at large and this deteriorates the environment.
With the growing population the huge waste is being generated day by day and it finally
identifies with municipal waste that is generated mainly from residential and
commercial complexes.
Objectives:
Many common products that we use in our daily lives contain potentially hazardous
ingredients and require special care when disposed of. It is illegal to dispose of
hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or onto the ground. Chemicals in
illegally or improperly disposed hazardous waste can be released into the environment
and contaminate our air, water, and possibly the food we eat. India is the first country
that has made constitutional provisions for protection and improvement of the
environment by virtue of State Policy Article 48-A of Chapter IV enjoins the state to
make all possible endeavour for protection and improvement of environment.
To maximize its effectiveness, it is necessary to educate and empower them with proper
public educational and awareness programmes.
Segregation of wastes:
Waste segregation basically means keeping wet and dry wastes separately; so that dry
can be recycled and wet waste can be composted. Collecting wastes and keeping
separate bins for metals and plastics, or having compartments to hold for different
types of recyclables. Collection times can also be adapted to suit needs, for instance by
collecting different types of recyclables on different days of the week, say, metals on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and plastics on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Saturdays.
c. Target Group: More than 500 participants from various Residents, household,
slum dwellers, Women, Students and others.

Sl.No.1 above - Activity suggested:
Preventive measures to reduce domestic garbage to be displayed as banners:
1. Use cloth bags.. say NO to plastic bags and materials. They take thousands of years to
decompose and until then they continue to threaten the environment.
2. Buy food materials that require less packaging. You can buy rice, beans, cereals, teas,
spices, and other dry foods in the bulk food section of your grocery store. Store the
foods in airtight glass or plastic containers when you get back home.
3. Do Vermi-composting. It is an easy technique but ensures soil ecosystem significantly.
A manual can be provided with necessary instructions/demonstration.
4. Don’t touch disposable bottled drinks unless so compelled under circumstances.
Always carry your own drinking water bottle that can be used repeatedly
5. Reduce paper usage
6. Use detergents carefully and keep different detergents separately used for specific
purposes.
7. Glass materials may be kept separately like paints, glues, other chemicals
8. Keep batteries, aerosols, mercury products, bulbs, automotive products like car wax,
motor oils and lubricants etc.
6
9. Keep carefully containers of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides and corrosive chemicals
even after their use until properly disposed.
10.Carefully keeping the household cosmetics, nail polish, hair spray, deodorants etc.
