Moonless Darkness Stands Between - Gerad Manley Hopkins

This poem reflects on Christmas Day and the darkness of the past being replaced by the light of the Bethlehem star, which can lead the speaker to see the one who freed them from their former self. The speaker asks God to make them pure and meek, as God is holy and was humble, so they can begin anew on Christmas Day.

MOONLESS DARKNESS STANDS BETWEEN – GERAD MANLEY

HOPKINS

Moonless darkness stands between.

Past, O past, no more be seen!
But the Bethlehem star may lead me
To the sight of Him who freed me
From the self that I have been.

Make me pure, Lord: Thou art holy;

Make me meek, Lord: Thou wert lowly;
Now beginning, and always:
Now begin, on Christmas Day.
