1. PROCEDURE FOR CALCULATING KICK TOLERANCE
The well diagram shows the situation as the top of the influx reaches the last casing shoe in
the open hole. The formation at the last casing shoe is presumed to be the openhole weak
point in this example.
Dwp = Depth of the openhole weak point
D = Total depth of well
Plo = Leak off press. at the openhole weak point
DDs,
wp,Ps
P lo
Pf = Formation pressure
H
H = Height of influx
D, Po
D, Pf
1) Calculate the maximum allowable height of influx in the openhole section
The maximum height of influx that can be taken in the openhole is given by:
H = 0.052 x Dwp x (Plo - MW) - 0.052 x D x (Pf + kick intensity* – MW) (ft)
0.052 x (MW – GW)
Where: H = vertical height of influx (ft)
Dwp = depth of the openhole weak point (ft)
D = total depth (ft)
MW = mud weight (ppg)
GW = gas weight (ppg)
Plo = leak off press. at the openhole weak point (exploration wells)

or FIT (development wells), in EMW (ppg)
Pf = formation pressure (ppg)
Kick intensity* = 1.0 ppg for exploration wells
0.5 ppg for development wells as per IPM standard IPM-ST-WCI-011
2) Calculate the volume that this height corresponds to at initial shut-in conditions
At initial shut-in conditions this can be converted to an influx volume as follows:
V = H x Ci (bbl)
Where: V = volume (bbl)
Ci = annular capacity at initial shut-in conditions (bbl/ft)
Ci must be determined bearing in mind the hole dimensions in relation to the height of the
influx, H. For example, if H is greater than the height of the BHA, both the capacity of the drill
pipe / openhole annulus and the drill collar / openhole annulus must be used to calculate the
volume V.
3) Calculate the volume that this height corresponds to when the top of the influx is at
the openhole weak point (Vwp)
This height corresponds to a volume at the openhole weak point given by:
Vwp = H x Cwp (bbl)
Where: Cwp = annular capacity below the openhole weak point (bbl/ft)
Cwp must be determined bearing in mind the hole dimensions immediately below the
openhole weak point in relation to the height of the of the influx, H.
4) Calculate what this volume (as calculated in 3)) would be at initial shut-in
conditions

Using Boyle’s law to convert this volume to its original volume at initial shut-in conditions:
P1 x V1 = P2 x V2
Or in this case:
0.052 x D x (Pf + kick intensity*) x V = 0.052 x Plo x Dwp x Vwp
Therefore:
V = Plo x Dwp x Vwp (bbl)
(Pf + kick intensity*) x D
Where: Vwp = volume of influx below the openhole weak point (bbl)
V = kick tolerance (bbl)
Pf = formation pressure (psi)
Plo = leak off press. at the openhole weak point (exploration wells) or FIT
(development wells), (EMW, ppg)
Dwp = depth of the openhole weak point (ft)
D = total depth of well (ft)
Kick intensity* = 1.0 for exploration wells and 0.5 for development wells as per IPM
standard IPM-ST-WCI-011, (ppg)
5) The actual kick tolerance is represented by the lower of 2) or 4)

2. NUMERICAL EXAMPLES
The following are examples of kick tolerance calculation in two different scenarios – Case 1,
exploration well and case 2, development well. Given:
Well total depth 8,000 ft
Estimated pore pressure at TD 11.5 ppg
Current mud weight 12.0 ppg
Influx weight (gas) 1.923 ppg
Last casing shoe 5,000 ft
LOT at shoe (EMW) 13.5 ppg
Current hole size 12 ¼”
BHA length / OD 300 ft / 8”
Drill pipe length / OD 7,700 ft / 5”
Annular capacity 12 ¼” - 8” 0.0836 bbl/ft
Annular capacity 12 ¼” - 5” 0.1215 bbl/ft
Case 1 – Exploration Well
The formation at the last casing shoe is presumed to be the openhole weak point in this
example.
1) Calculate the maximum allowable height of influx in the openhole section
H = 0.052 x 5,000 x (13.5 – 12.0) - 0.052 x 8,000 x (11.5 + 1.0 – 12.0)
0.052 x (12.0 – 1.923)
H = 347 ft
In case of an exploration well, the kick intensity to be used is 1.0 ppg as per IPM standard
IPM-ST-WCI-011.

2) Calculate the volume that this height corresponds to at initial shut-in conditions
V = 300 x 0.0836 + 47 x 0.1215 = 30.7 bbl
Since H is greater than the height of the BHA (drill collars), both the capacity of the drill pipe
/ openhole annulus and the drill collar / openhole annulus must be used to calculate the
volume V.
3) Calculate the volume that this height corresponds to when the top of the influx is at
the openhole weak point (Vwp)
Vwp = H x Cwp = 347 x 0.1215 = 42.1 bbl
4) Calculate what this volume (as calculated in 3)) would be at initial shut-in
conditions
V = 13.5 x 5,000 x 42.1 = 28.4 bbl
(11.5 + 1) x 8,000
In case of an exploration well, the kick intensity to be used is 1.0 ppg as per IPM standard
IPM-ST-WCI-011.
5) The actual kick tolerance is represented by the lower of 2) or 4)
Therefore the actual kick tolerance is 28.4 bbl
Case 2 – Development Well
The formation at the last casing shoe is presumed to be the openhole weak point in this
example.
1) Calculate the maximum allowable height of influx in the openhole section
H = 0.052 x 5,000 x (13.5 – 12.0) - 0.052 x 8,000 x (11.5 + 0.5 – 12.0)
0.052 x (12.0 – 1.923)

H = 744 ft
In case of a development well, the kick intensity to be used is 0.5 ppg as per IPM standard
IPM-ST-WCI-011.
Please note that for development wells, in many cases a Formation Integrity Test (FIT) is
recorded instead of a Leak Off Test (LOT) and should be used in the formula above to
calculate the height of the influx H.
2) Calculate the volume that this height corresponds to at initial shut-in conditions
V = 300 x 0.0836 + 444 x 0.1215 = 79.0 bbl
Vwp = H x Cwp = 744 x 0.1215 = 90.3 bbl
4) Calculate what this volume (as calculated in 3)) would be at initial shut-in
conditions
V = 13.5 x 5,000 x 90.3 = 63.4 bbl
(11.5 + 0.5) x 8,000
In case of a development well, the kick intensity to be used is 0.5 ppg as per IPM standard
IPM-ST-WCI-011.
5) The actual kick tolerance is represented by the lower of 2) or 4)
Therefore the actual kick tolerance is 63.4 bbl
