The International System of Units (SI) is the standard system of measurement used internationally. It defines seven base units like meters, kilograms, and seconds that are used to describe other units by combining them with prefixes like kilo and milli. This allows scientists to precisely define and easily communicate quantities using consistent standards across disciplines.

SI Measurement

The International System of Units, or SI, is SI works by combining prefixes and base
the standard system of measurement used by units. Each base unit can be used with dif-
many scientists. Using the same standards of ferent prefixes to define smaller and larger
measurement makes it easier for scientists to quantities. The table below lists common SI
communicate with one another. prefixes.

SI Prefixes
Prefix Abbreviation Factor Example
kilo- k 1,000 kilogram, 1 kg = 1,000 g
hecto- h 100 hectoliter, 1 hL = 100 L
deka- da 10 dekameter, 1 dam = 10 m
1 meter, liter
deci- d 0.1 decigram, 1 dg = 0.1 g
centi- c 0.01 centimeter, 1 cm = 0.01 m
milli- m 0.001 milliliter, 1 mL = 0.001 L
micro- µ 0.000 001 micrometer, 1 µm = 0.000 001 m
