Burning Permit Categories (Check one):
1. The “Minimum distance requirement” listed on the Burning Permit will indicate which Category your open fire
falls under and the size restriction associated with that Category.
2. An applicant may request from the Fire Chief a variance on the distance from a property line when there is
no threat or risk to the adjacent property.
3. Open burning is only permitted on private property. No District property may be used other than by the
District of Lillooet or its agent.
4. Open burning is to be carried out by the property owner, tenant or an agent acting on behalf of the property
owner. The owner/occupant or agent accepts all responsibility for any liability as a result of the fire.
5. The holder of an open fire burning permit shall be a minimum of 18 years of age and shall be present and
the person in charge of the fire while it is burning or smoldering and until such fire is completely
extinguished;
6. Sufficient equipment, supplies and personnel must be onsite in order to prevent the fire from getting beyond
control or becoming a nuisance, (a minimum of; 1 hand tool person and enough water to fully extinguish the

7. Neighbours of adjoining properties are to be notified by the permit holder as to the times of the burn.
8. Fires are not to be within 500 metres of a school in session, hospitals or facilities used for continuing care.
9. The burning of prohibit materials is considered an offence against this bylaw and will result in a fine and the
cancellation of your burning permit.
10. When added to a burning pile, logs, stumps, branches and other fuel shall be placed on the pile and not
dropped as to not cause ambers to fly about or pushed onto the burning pile by use of a bulldozer or similar
equipment so that the burning material maybe buried underground.
11. The permit holder is responsible for confirming that the venting index is between “GOOD” (55-100) in the
Fraser Canyon zone and “FAIR or “GOOD” the next afternoon. This can be done by calling Environment
Initials Canada at 1-888-281-2992 or check online at www.lillooetfiredept.ca home page click on the BC Venting
Index Interactive Map Icon. When using the Interactive map the map will display “YES” if is okay to burn.
12. The ignition of fires shall not commence prior to 7:00am and shall be fully extinguished by 10:00pm of the
same day. Additional fuel shall not be added to the existing burning pile after sunset.
13. Burning piles are to be extinguished or not ignited when wind and weather conditions are such that to do so
Initials is likely to be hazardous to life or property or create a nuisance to surrounding properties.
14. All fires ignited under this burning permit must be extinguished prior to the expiry, or upon cancellation, of
the permit.
15. Open fire burning permits will be issued for durations of longer than 72 hours. A minimum of 15 days must
lapse between burns that are situated on the same parcel of land.

16. Any person who causes or through inadvertence, allows a fire to get beyond control and requires the
assistance of the Lillooet Fire Department personnel, shall be liable to a charge at cost for such assistance
Initials as specified in Schedule "B" attached to and forming part of this Bylaw.
