Composer Notes
Over the years I have had a warm and friendly relationship with the Irish National Centre for
Liturgy. The Centre kindly invited me to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in November 2013 to
offer some lectures, share in a panel, and guide some discussions to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary
of the promulgation of Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. As a small
gesture of thanks for the Centre’s hospitality, I composed “Draw Near” for this gathering and it was
first sung by the participants during the conference.
I thought this composition would be especially appropriate since the text is drawn from the so-
called Antiphonary of Bangor, the original of which is presumed to have been written at Bangor
Abbey in contemporary County Down, Northern Ireland, before being transferred to (or copied
at) Bobbio Monastery and then taken to Milan by Cardinal Federico Borromeo when he founded
the Ambrosian Library there. The source for “Draw Near” is “Sancti venite Christi corpus sumite,”
a eucharistic hymn found only in the Antiphonary of Bangor. That it was intended to be sung as a
Communion processional is supported by the heading “Ymnum quando comunicarent sacerdotes”
(Hymn when priests go to Communion).
As with many of my compositions, “Draw Near” is composed with a variety of pastoral situations
in mind. It would be possible to have the assembly learn and sing the entire hymn, perhaps even
attempt to have them sing the refrain in four-part harmony. Alternatively a cantor or choir could
sing the verses of the hymn while the assembly simply sings the refrain in unison or harmony.
The most complex version appears in the octavo edition in which each verse expands from unison
singing (vs. 1) to two-part (vs. 2) to SATB a cappella singing (vs. 3) to a descanted version of the
melody (vs. 4). While it should be sung and played reverently, there should also be a strong sense
of rhythmic pulse to the piece, focused as it is on the movement of the faithful to Communion and
then back to the pews.
“Draw Near” could be sung as a Communion processional at any Eucharist. It would be especially
appropriate to be sung on Holy Thursday, Corpus Christi, or any feast with strong eucharistic
overtones (e.g., the Bread of Life discourses found midway through the Sundays of Ordinary
Time, Year B, when the multiplication of the loaves is proclaimed). It would be less appropriate for
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament or eucharistic adoration services since the focus of the text is
on the actual physical consumption of the eucharistic elements.
