Gunahon Ka Devta (The God of Sins)

A Professor in the city of Allahabad is leading a paradoxical life. In his professional role, he is
compassionate to needy students and has regard for talent without any discrimination. But as
an individual he has a deep rooted belief in the caste system. This double face attitude
symbolizes the modern soft casteism and forms the main theme of the novel. All this takes a
huge toll on the life of the protagonists of the story, the professor’s daughter and his favourite
student, whose relation of love and affection reaches a point where it is meaningless for all
practical purposes.

"Who you are" and "what the society wants you to be"; such critical questions trigger oscillating
emotions in human brain and prompt it to take absurd decisions which at times prove fatal. The
hero of the story readily sacrifices his personal interests for his high ideals, only to realise later
that he has made a fool of himself. Hurt beyond heal, he treads on the opposite trail and does
everything he was earlier opposed to. A God of social perceptions falls in his own sight.

Up, down and up, with multiple chaotic turnings in-between, it’s a roller-coaster ride. As the
beliefs of the characters shatter, the reader is forced to question his own. There is a mad
character, whose ideas mysteriously provoke deep thoughts:

"That person is extra-ordinary, who keeps denying the truth. The moment he accepts it, he is
defeated and becomes ordinary"

This story rivals the tragedy of Sharatchandra's Devdas and is placed among the classics of
Hindi literature.

Caution note: It’s a gloomy read and may seem unnecessarily melodramatic. To appreciate it
fully, one needs to keep in mind the social circumstances of the 40s.
