WEATHER AND CLIMATE
UNIT 4
WEATHER VS
CLIMATE
SIMILARITIES
THEY HAVE THINGS IN COMMON,
LIKE:
• TEMPERATURE: The air
temperatura is a measure of TEMPERATURE PRECIPITATION
how hot or cold the air is
• PRECIPITATION:Can be rain snow,
sleet or hail. Ot is fall as part of
the water cycle
• ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE : It is
weight of the air above the
Earth´s surface
• WIND : It
is the movement of
air. There are type if wind
like Breeze and Gale. WIND
ATMOSPHERIC
PRESSURE
DIFERENCES:
WEATHER CLIMATE
• LOOKS AT SHORT TERM CHANGE • LOOK AT LONG-TERM AVERAGES
• IT IS THE STATE OF THE • IT IS AVERAGE STATE OF THE
ATMPOSPHERE AT A PARTICULAR ATMOSPHERE IN A PARTICULAR
PLACE AND TIME AREA OVER A LONG PERIOD OF
EXAMPLE: TIME
“The weather in Málaga today is EXAMPLE:
warm and sunny” “Málaga has a climate of warm
and dry summer; in Winter are
mild and wet”
ACTIVITIES
• 1.-WHICH OF THE STATEMENTS ARE ABOUT WEATHER, AND
WHICH ABOUT CLIMATE?
a) It´s sunny today, so let´s go to the beach
b) It´s always ot in August
c) Last week it rained every day
d) The average rainfall in the UK is higher than in Spain
CLIMATE FACTORS
• THE WEATHER AND CLIMATE
LATITUDE:
ARE AFFECTED BY:
• LATITUDE: How far north and
south of the Equador a place is.
• ALTITUDE: The vertical distance
above sea level.
• DISTANCE FROM THE COAST
ALTITUDE
LATITUDE CLIMATIC ZONES
Temperature vary with
altitude.
The temperature is
highest near the Hot or
equator Hot or
The temperature
is lowest near to
poles
We can find that the Earth is divided
We can
into find that
Five the Erth is
climatic divided into 5 climatic zones
zones
CLIMATIC ZONES:
THE HOT ZONES OR TROPIC:
• Between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn
• The Sun´s ray cover this área all the year, therefore, Sun´s heat is
concentrated and it is always hot
TWO TEMPERATE ZONES:
• Between Tropic of cancer and the Artic Circle
• Between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antartic Circle.
• The Sun´s ray are spread over a large area, and the ray are less
concentrated.
• What happen then? These areas are not as hot as the hot zone
TWO COLD ZONES:
• Inside the Artic and Antartic Circles
• The Sun´s rays are spread over a very large area.
• What happen then? They dont give much heat and it is always cold.
ALTITUDE
TEMPERATURE ARE:
• Warmest at low altitudes
• Coldest at high altitude
The temperatura decreases by
6.5 Cº for each 1,000 of altitude
DISTANCES FROM
THE SEA
The main feature of the sea is
moderates temperatura
What happen in summer?
• The sea takes longer to heat up
than the inland.
• That is mean that the coastal
areas are less hot in summer
than inland areas
What happen in Winter?
• The sea takes longer to cool
down than the inland
• It means that coastal areas are
less cold in Winter than inland
areas Sum up, Coastal areas are milder
than inland áreas
