Calcium Gluconate Drug Study

Calcium gluconate is used to treat negative calcium balance, cardiac toxicity from hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia during blood transfusions, and as an antidote for magnesium sulfate or lead poisoning. It works by increasing cardiac muscle tone and the force of contractions. It should be given intravenously over 20 minutes to rapidly restore serum calcium levels. Nurses should monitor for signs of hypercalcemia or digitalis toxicity and check calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels during sustained therapy.
