Method Statement For Pipe Laying Along Road Shoulder - Edurapotha 2
Method Statement For Pipe Laying Along Road Shoulder - Edurapotha 2
Traffic arrangement
Sign boards at both ends of working stretch will be placed as per the given specification of
NWSDB and to comply with the Section No 103 of the Specifications for construction and
maintenance of Roads and Bridges. ( Standard & Particular)
In case of road closure during pipe laying period, prior approval from the Engineer and
relevant road authority will be taken.
Trench Excavation
Trial holes will be carried out do investigate the existing utilities with coordination of the
relevant authorities.
Trench excavation for laying of pipes will be open cut according to the approved drawings
and specification of NWSDB.
Excavation deeper than 1.5m will be protected with shoring to protect either side of the road
due to such excavations. The method statement will be forwarded before commencing the
works.
Asphalt cutter or jack hammer will be used for demolishing of Tar/ Asphalt layer.
Backhoe loaders with 300mm size bucket will be used for excavation work.
All surplus excavated material and material arising from site clearance will be disposed to
approved dumping yards from the site as per the Environmental Management Action Plan.
Excavation will be done leaving at least one traffic lane.
Proper barricading and safety precautions to be taken for the safety of the road users while
trenching until permanent reinstatement is done.
Proper illumination/reflective signs will be provided to identify the trenches during the period
of darkness.
Arrangement shall be made with police in order to maintain free traffic flow during the
execution of the trenching work.
Backfilling
All trenches shall be backfilled immediately after pipes are laid therein for the work as per the
relevant Sections of the Specifications for construction and maintenance of Roads and
Bridges. ( Standard & Particular)
The selection of backfilling materials, method of construction (reinstatement) and tests to be
carried out will be in accordance with the relevant chapters of the Standard Specification for
Construction and Maintenance of Roads and Bridges, ICTAD Publication No.
ICTAD/SCA/05, Second Edition- June 2009.
Further, testing of backfilling materials will be carried out through regional laboratory,
Kegalle, RDA. The details of Borrow Pits, Metal Quarry/Crushers, etc., will be forwarded to
RDA and prior approval will be obtained for the Chief Engineer, Kegalle, RDA, before using
the same. The approved backfilling materials will be transported to a piling/dumping yard
from the approved borrow pits, quarries/crushers etc. and plied/dumped there. The materials
to be issued to the work sites only from these approved piles/yards.
When the excavated soil is suitable for backfilling, prior approval shall be taken by submitting
necessary test reports by keeping that soil in stock yard and closing of working location as per
the Section No 103 of the Specifications for construction and maintenance of Roads and
Bridges. ( Standard & Particular)
Each layer will be uniformly placed and tamped with proper hand tools in a manner which
will not disturb or injure the pipe.
Additional soil, will be obtained from approved borrow pits.
The filling material will be the soil having the maximum dry density under modified proctor
compaction test not less than 1750 Kg/m3 with the properties PI<20% , LL<40% , CBR
>30% and the particle sizes not greater than 37.5mm
Bedding for pipes will be provided as per the contract drawings and specifications.
Backfill material will be compacted in layers of 150mm thick by mechanical compactors
(rammers) to achieve to a dry density not less than 98% of the maximum dry density of the
material in modified proctor compaction test.
Where necessary the Contractor will adjust the moisture content of the fill material to the + 2
or – 2 of Optimum Moisture Content either by drying out or by adding water to assist the
compaction of the materials.
Trench will not be kept open other than for testing.
Marker tape will be placed on top of the surrounding layer.
Temporary reinstatement will be carried out by providing an aggregate base course (ABC)
layer of 250mm thick 100% compacted on the top of the sub base and priming with
bituminous emulsion CSS 1 at the rate of 1.0 ltr/m2.
The permanent reinstatement is done with the removal of the top 100 mm as per the
specification.
Asphalt Concrete (AC) Binder Course (BC) 60 mm thick and Wearing Course (WC) 40mm
thick layers shall be laid & compacted on top of Primed surface after applying bituminous
emulsion CRS 1 Tack Coat (TC) at a rate of 0.5 ltr/m2
The permanent reinstatement will be done using hot Asphalt Premix or cold mix
Or
Temporary reinstatement will be carried out by providing an aggregate base course (ABC)
layer of 250mm thick 100% compacted on the top of the sub base 60mm below the road finish
level and priming with bituminous emulsion CSS 1 at the rate of 1.0 ltr/m2.
The permanent reinstatement will be done using Asphalt cold mix to fill the top 60mm on top
of Primed surface after applying bituminous emulsion CRS 1 Tack Coat (TC) at a rate of 0.5
ltr/m2
