Abstract: The Pampean Ranges are an i mportant morphost ructural unit

in Cent ral and NW A r gent ina consist ing essent ially of an Upper Pre
cambrian - Lowe r Paleozoic c ryst alline base m ent. From E to W fou r
large zones can be recognized based on lithological characte ristics:
An eastern batholithic zone comp rising g r anites and g r anodiorites
with few outc rop:> 'of metamorphic rocks of variable g rade.
A cent ral met a m o rphic - igneous zone consist ing of low- to hi gh-grade
metamorphic rocks as gneisses, m i g m at ites, schists and phyllites as
well as marbles and amphibolites. The g ranitic bodies are large-sized
in the Cordoba and San Luis p rovinces and become s m aller towa rds
the N.
A cent ral batholithic zone divided into t wo subzones. In the northern
one g ramt lc to g ranodioritic batholiths occ u r , while in the southern
one tonal itic - granodioritic batholiths are abundant . The easte rn
boundary of this region is defined by a large mylonitic belt.
The weste rn metamorphic - igneous zone separated f rom the other
zones by the Famat ina Syst e m . The most typical rocks of this zone
are amphibolites and marbles as well as basic and ult rabasic rocks,
gneisses, schists and m i g m at ites. Granitoid int rusions are s m al l and
rare.
