CALTRANS AND THOMAS ROADS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

ANNOUNCE HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
ON STATE ROUTE 99 AND STATE ROUTE 58 IN THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD
Construction projects invest over $450 million into State Highway System in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD– Caltrans today announced seven construction projects that will bring a
busy construction schedule to central Bakersfield through 2022. The projects represent
an investment of over $450 million into the State Highway system within the city of
Bakersfield and will cover a variety of needs, including new asphalt overlays, new
retaining walls, new sound walls and more.

“State Route 58 and State Route 99 are critical links in the state transportation network,”
said Caltrans District 6 Director Sharri Bender-Ehlert. “That network is used by
interstate travelers, local commuters within metropolitan Bakersfield, and a great
number of regional and inter-regional trucks.”

The projects in the area where State Route 58 and State Route 99 intersect will provide
upgrades to existing facilities and additions to the infrastructure. These improvements
will reduce the wear and tear on vehicles traveling through Central Bakersfield, provide
a smoother ride and improve overall safety.

The projects discussed during the press conference and the project maps are included
in the pages accompanying this release.
