 About the Host Institution
National Institute of Technology Calicut is one of the premier technical
institutions in India. NITC is set in a picturesque landscape at the foothills of
Western Ghats, located on the Calicut - Mukkam road, about 22km from Calicut
City. The institute offers nine undergraduate and twenty postgraduate programmes
apart from the Ph.D programme under different departments. The institute has good
infrastructure in computing, information technology, laboratories and library
including a hi-tech Nalanda digital library. Round the clock internet access is
available for all staff and students in the NITC Campus.

The School of Management Studies (SOMS) established in the year

2008, offers two year full time Post Graduate Programme in Management (MBA)
and Research Programme (Ph.D.). The MBA programme has been designed as per
international standards at par with IIMs, IITs and Reputed Institutions. In this
endeavour, the school invokes excellent executive competence among graduates.
The deliverable of the programme is to contribute to the business fraternity,
competent executive and professionals combined with human values, meeting the
needs and standards of industry globally. The Ph.D. program is drawn in a manner
to imbibe managerial research and to establish the research culture while retaining
the identity of the individual.

Backdrop

A rapidly growing private and business enterprise sector has created a

new demand for social science research for business management, commerce,
marketing, media and other fields. The need of the hour is to develop a sound
methodological base of research among educationalist and researchers. Subhrajit
Chatterjee (2015) in his work on „Social Science Research in India: Basic
Challenges‟ underlines that most of the researchers in India are not well equipped
with latest research techniques.

To counter the above challenges, School of Management Studies,

National Institute of Technology Calicut joins hands with Indian Council of Social
Science Research (ICSSR) to offer a “Ten-day Research Methodology Workshop
for Research Scholars in Social Science”.

About the Workshop

The research methodology course for Ph.D students in social science is
expected to cover the basics of research methodology focusing on theoretical and
practical inputs. The course gives training to the participants to apply them to a
problem, which includes developing the theory, choosing methods, material,
scientific tools and training in techniques relevant for the problem chosen.

Programme Objective
 To provide knowledge on theory, roles of theory and building theory
 To explain theoretical and methodological aspects of scale
development
 To provide hands-on training on multivariate data analysis tools such as
simple and multi linear regression, factor analysis and Structural
Equation Modeling (SEM) with application of Statistical Package for
Social Science (SPSS) and AMOS respectively.
 To expose the participants to the process of scholarly manuscript
writing and review process in the top notch journal

Eligibility
The registered PhD students in social sciences in any Indian
University/Institute are eligible to apply for the workshop.

Registration
There is no registration fee for the Workshop. Interested candidates may
send their duly filled in registration form to the course director on or before 15th
February 2019. Registration form and brochure can be downloaded from the

The candidates must send scanned copies of registration form and other
documents by Email to [email protected], followed by hard copy.

The duly filled in registration form forwarded by supervisor and Head of the
Department/Institute should be accompanied by the following documents:
1. One page bio-data of the candidate along with academic certificates.
2. Ph.D registration certificate
3. Two-page synopsis containing Title of Study, Statement of Problem,
Scope of Study, Objectives of Study, Hypotheses, Census/ Population /
Sample design – Sample Size, Sample Unit, Sampling frame, Data
collection and Data Analysis.
4. Attested copy of Caste/Community certificate of ST/SC/OBC/Minority.

Important Dates
The course is planned to be completed in ten days‟ time period from 11th to
20th March 2019.

Accommodation will be provided to the outstation participants and travel

allowances by shortest route (2nd class return railway fare/actual bus fare) will be
reimbursed to the outstation participants subject to the production of ticket as per
ICSSR guidelines
