BBPT

This document describes a 2nd grade science lesson plan that uses the Bubbl.us mind mapping tool. The lesson teaches students about omnivores, carnivores and herbivores by having them create a mind map categorizing animals based on their diets. Students will add at least 6 animals to each category on their individual maps. They will then present their maps to the class and the teacher will post them online for additional practice. To assess learning, students will complete a blank mind map identifying animals' diets. The lesson allows students to be creative while demonstrating their understanding of different organisms' eating habits.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: What does an Animal eat?

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade

Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of
different living organisms.
d. Develop models to illustrate the unique and diverse life cycles of organisms other than
humans.
Technology Standard Addressed: 4: Innovative Designer

Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☒ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For ELL and ESOL students, this will be a great activity for them because it allows for them to take
control of their learning. It allows for them to take the content that they were taught and organize it in a way
that they can understand. It allows for them to take as much time needed to organize their thoughts and
present them in a very creative way. This software allows for lots of flexibility and space for them to present
their thoughts thoroughly.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will ask students to think of their favorite food and what animal they believe will enjoy it
the most. They will then share their thoughts with the class. After every child has shared, the teacher will
explain to each child what an omnivore, carnivore and herbivore is through text and various videos. Students
will be allowed to use all materials from the lesson and any other resources they deem useful to plan. Each
student will be released to use the Bubbl.us mind map on the computer and asked to come up with at least 6
animals to add to each category.
After each child has successfully created their maps, they will be asked to write down the name of each
animal and what foods they eat in sentence form. Students will then present their maps to the class. The
teacher will post each mind map on the classroom blog for studying and extra practice. After days of practice,
students will be given an assessment using Bubbl.us where they will be given a blank mind map and asked to
fill it in. Each student will be graded on a level of accuracy.
Reflective Practice:
This is a great activity for students because it allows them to show their creativity when creating mind
maps while also learning and showing knowledge and understanding of the content. Allowing the students to
complete an assignment and present the information prepares them for the test that will be given using the
same site. Posting the mind maps on the classroom blog allows for students to be able to practice outside of
school in preparation the test.
