Translation practice: French

This resource provides translation practice to support our AS French

specification (7651). In addition to the translation exercises provided in the
sample assessment materials for this specification, this resource helps students
translate to and from the target language. These translations and accompanying
mark schemes follow a similar format and level of demand to the AS sample
assessment materials.
The resource is divided into two sections.
Section 1 includes five AS-style translation exercises from the target language
into English, with mark schemes.
Section 2 includes five AS-style translation exercises from English into the target
language, each with a supporting text and mark scheme.
Section 1 - translations into English
Acceptable quality of English in translations into English
Errors in spelling
Where the candidate’s attempted spelling is a recognisable form of the correct
spelling and does not correspond to another English word, the attempted
spelling is accepted eg weight mis-spelt as waight is acceptable but mis-spelt as
wait gives another word and so causes ambiguity.

Alternative answers
Examiners will be provided with a range of alternative answers in mark-schemes
but in the event that these do not legislate for all versions and variations which
candidates might produce, the guiding principle will be that answers that convey
the same intended meaning are accepted.

Successful translation
Translation will be deemed successful if an English speaker would understand
the translation and if each element of the original text figures in the translation.

Section 2 - translations into the target language
Guidance on level of translation accuracy into the target language
Errors of accent
Errors in accent are accepted unless (a) they are grammatical or (b) the inclusion
of the accent(s) causes ambiguity.

Errors of spelling
Errors in spelling will not be tolerated.
Tense endings, irregular verb forms and adjective endings must be correct.

Errors of gender
Errors in gender will not be tolerated. Genders of nouns are clearly an area
where guidance can be provided in the passage that supports the translation
task.

Alternative answers
Alternative answers offered by the candidate – even if one is in brackets – will be
rejected unless both answers are correct.

A successful translation
A successful translation is one which includes each element of the text to be
translated and where there is no omission or paraphrase.

Repeated errors
Where a candidate repeats the same error within a question, no further penalty
will be imposed in awarding the mark.

Marking the translations

Award one tick per correct section then use the conversion grid at the end of
each mark scheme section to award a total of 15 marks.

Un grand classique du cinéma !
Dans un petit théâtre de Paris une petite troupe de comédiens dirigée par
Marine Lenoir tente de monter une pièce de théâtre en secret tout en cherchant
à survivre pendant l’occupation.
Nous voyons l’actrice indépendante et arrogante, une nouvelle vedette à la
stature massive, incarnée par le jeune acteur Jean-Paul Duval et le metteur en
scène juif enfermé dans la cave ou encore la jeune femme qui fabrique les
costumes des acteurs. Puis il y a la menace continuelle des occupants allemands,
sans parler de la Gestapo, les dirigeants invisibles mais présents. Tout cela
accompagné par une bande sonore captivante.
C’est sans aucun doute un beau film nostalgique et émouvant.

L’activité la plus connue des bénévoles qui travaillent pour les Restos du cœur,
c’est de donner un coup de main aux plus mal nourris.
Un grand nombre de centres de distribution reste ouvert toute l’année pour
fournir de l’aide alimentaire nutritive, surtout aux familles. Partout en France,
