Play Synopsis:
Into the Woods is a tale about several fairy tale characters. It follows the wish of a baker and his
wife as they wish to have a child and discover that a curse was placed on their family tree by a
witch. They journey into the woods to lift the curse and they meet Jack who is trying to sell his
cow. They also meet Cinderella and little Red Riding hood in the woods. Every character has a
wish, and their wishes come true, as they journey in the woods. However, they discover that each
wish and action they make in the woods can result in some disastrous consequences.
In Fairfield County, CT Into the Woods hasn’t been produced in recent years by High Schools. A
community theatre in Richter Danbury, 30 minutes away did the production in July 2017. In
December of 2018 Julliard Drama will do the production, which is about an hour and a half
away. May 2019 the Connecticut Theatre will be putting it on, located in New Britain, CT which
is about an hour away from our school. It is a popular play in the surrounding areas of Fairfield
My overall design statement for Into the Woods is to emphasize the fear of the unknown.
To me, “the woods” throughout the play represent the unknow that each of us must face
throughout our lives. I will emphasize this through the directing with the actors, and with the
lights and sound throughout the play. I will stage the play traditionally, keeping to the details
required in the script. I feel that the woods naturally exemplify this fear of the unknown with the
natural shadows that the tall trees cast. I want to keep that feeling in the set.
In my artistic approach I plan to collaborate with my other theatre faculty and students
throughout the creation and rehearsal process. I will be directing this production and Mrs. D will
be helping with the costumes. Other faculty members will help throughout the process as
indicated on the production calendar. I plan to work with the students, particularly in acting to
allow them to explore new their own interpretations of how each character contains this fear of
There are many themes in Into the Woods that can be emphasized along with the fear of
the unknown, in particular I want to emphasize the them of consequences. From act one to act
two we see the strong influence that our choices have on ourselves and other people. Often
students (or anyone for that matter) can go through life thinking that what they do doesn’t affect
those around them, and that is not true. In working with students, I want to emphasize this life
message and theme to them and to the audience. I will do so, by helping them understand each
consequence each character experiences throughout the play. I will facilitate many discussions as
to why they think their character is doing what they do, and why certain consequences follow.
We will have many discussions and I will relate them back to their own lives, to help them apply
particularly challenging for both singing and for the orchestra. For this production the theatre
department will work with the music department to perform this musical with a live orchestra. It
will be very beneficial to both the music and the theatre students to learn and master this
challenging music and to have the experience to work together in live performances.
Design Concept.
Scenic & prop design: As stated above, I want the set to have a feeling of unknown. This will
be done through having tall trees with ominous shadows and sounds throughout the show. We
are planning on renting the set and props through fourth wall scenic, as our budget allows us to.
This will cover all the set pieces, and props required for the show and it will also include
professional stage crew to set up and take down the set. The tech students will be able to have
first hand learning from and working with professional stage crew throughout this experience.
Costume Design: I want to keep the costume design traditional to the play. I like the idea of
having these plain people and characters seeming familiar and relatable to the audience. I want
them to look very traditional so that the audience can take comfort in looking at them and then
Lighting/ Sound/ Media: As I stated before I want the lighting to be very shadowy with lots of
greys, and greens throughout the woods we could also use media projections to help create these
shadows. Sound will have the sound effects required throughout the script, such as the giant
footsteps, and thunder. I would also like to include the sound soft rustling of trees in the
background and light nature sounds, that aren’t quite soothing, but not scary either. Both the
sound and light will combine to create a feeling of the fear of the unknown.

ACCESSORIES: Certain accessories are automatically included in the rental price; others
are subject to additional charges. The prices quoted on our standard plots reflect these
considerations.
ONE OR ONE HUNDRED: At Norcostco, we are happy to rent you all of the costumes for
a show, some of the costumes, or just one costume if that is all that you need. We can
take full responsibility for being your costumer, or you can use us as a supplier for those
harder-to-come-by costumes.
ACTOR SUBSIDIES: In many schools and community theatres, students/actors are willing
to pitch in and pay all or part of the rental costume charges in order to have quality and
attractive costumes for their show. The order can be placed in the usual manner with the

our website. Please remember that complete and accurate measurements eliminate
estimating sizes and facilitate a better fit. Norcostco requires submission of a signed and
fully completed order form before production of your order can take place.
PLAN AHEAD: Our goal is to provide you with complete and timely service along with the
greatest looking costumes possible. Please place your orders early; ultimately, this ensures
the best look for your show. If you give us complete information well in advance of your
production date, we in turn are able to give your show our best effort.
EXPEDITED SHIPPING: Norcostco specializes in meeting the last minute needs of our
customers and during certain times of the year, our shipping calendar can become quite
full. Please be aware that the timeliness with which you place your order determines your
placement in the schedule. In some cases, expedited shipping may become necessary
and those charges are the responsibility of the customer.
