Q1. Solve the following set of linear equations by first finding the inverse of the coefficient
matrix by using RREF method.
3𝑎 + 4𝑏 + 5𝑐 + 2𝑑 = 3
5𝑎 + 3𝑏 + 5𝑐 + 5𝑑 = 5
2𝑎 + 3𝑏 + 4𝑐 + 2𝑑 = 2
3𝑎 + 3𝑏 + 4𝑐 + 4𝑑 = 1

Q2. Find the coefficients a,b,c,d of the polynomial 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐𝑥 2 + 𝑑𝑥 3 , if 𝑓(𝑥) passes
through (1, −1), (2,25), (−1,7), (−1.5,4).

Q3. For what values of 𝑎 and 𝑏 the system of linear equation has
𝑎𝑥1 + 𝑏𝑥2 + 2𝑥3 = 1
𝑎𝑥1 + (2𝑏 − 1)𝑥2 + 3𝑥3 = 1
𝑎𝑥1 + 𝑏𝑥2 + (𝑏 + 3)𝑥3 = 2𝑏
(i) a unique solution.

Q4. Let A be a square matrix. If 𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑘(𝐴) = 𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑘(𝐴2 ), Show that the equation systems 𝐴𝑥 = 0
and 𝐴2 𝑥 = 0 have the same solution space.

Q5. Find a basis for each of the following subspaces of ℝ5


𝑊1 = {(𝑎1 , 𝑎2 , 𝑎3 , 𝑎4 , 𝑎5 ) ∈ 𝑅 5 : 𝑎1 − 𝑎2 − 𝑎4 = 0}
𝑊2 = {(a1 , a2 , a3 , a4 , a5 ) ∈ R5 : a2 = a3 = a4 and a1 + a5 = 0 }.
What are dimensions of 𝑊1 and 𝑊2 ?
Q6. Show that the set {1 − 2𝑥 − 2𝑥 2 , −2 + 3𝑥 − 𝑥 2 , 1 − 𝑥 + 6𝑥 2 } is a basis of 𝑃2 . Find the
coordinate vector of 1 + 𝑥 + 𝑥 2 relative to this basis.
Q7. Consider the matrix

(i) Find bases for 𝑟𝑜𝑤(𝐴), 𝑐𝑜𝑙(𝐴) and 𝑛𝑢𝑙𝑙(𝐴).
(ii) Verify Dimension theorem for matrices.
(iii) For 𝑆 = {(2, −4, 0,2, 1), (−1, 2, 1, 2, 3), (1, −2, 1, 4, 4)}, find a basis of 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑛(𝑆).
(iv) For 𝑆 = {(2, −1, , 1), (−4, 2, 2), (0, 1, 1), (2, 2, 4), (1, 3, 4)}, find a basis 𝐵 of 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑛(𝑆)
such that 𝐵 ⊆ 𝑆.
Q8. (i) If A is 3 × 5 matrix, then show that the columns of A must be linearly independent.

Q9. Using the definition, check whether the following transformations are one-to-one:
(i) 𝑇: ℝ3 → ℝ4 given by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (𝑦, 𝑧, −𝑦, 0).
(ii) 𝑇: ℝ2 → ℝ3 given by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦) = (2𝑥, 𝑥 − 𝑦, 0).
Q10. Check if the transformation 𝑇: ℝ3 → ℝ3 given by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (𝑥, 𝑥 + 𝑦 − 𝑧, 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧) is
invertible. If yes, find 𝑇 −1 .
Q11. (i) Is it possible to find a linear transformation 𝑇: 𝑉 → 𝑊 where 𝑉, 𝑊 are finite
dimensional vector spaces such that image of a linearly dependent subset of 𝑉 is linearly
independent subset of 𝑊? Justify your answer.
(ii) Is it possible that image of a subspace under a linear transformation 𝑇: 𝑉 → 𝑊 be a
singleton linearly independent set? Justify your answer.

Q12. Find the basis of Ker (T) and Range(T) for the linear transformation 𝑇: ℝ4 → 𝑃3 defined as
𝑇(𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , 𝑥3 , 𝑥4 ) = 𝑥1 + (𝑥2 − 𝑥3 )𝑡 + (𝑥1 − 𝑥3 )𝑡 3 .
Q13. Let 𝑆 = {𝑡 2 + 𝑡 + 1, 𝑡 2 + 2𝑡 + 3, 𝑡 2 + 1} and 𝑇 = {𝑡 + 1, 𝑡 2 , 𝑡 2 + 1} be two
bases of P2.
(a) Find the transition matrix PT→S from T to S basis.
(b) Using the above PT S , find the QS T from S to T basis.

Q14. Consider two order bases S = {t + 1, t – 1} and T = {2t, t + 1}. Let the matrix of a linear
