a young teenager, I absorbed
the blue skies, Cadillacs and
palm trees, and felt this was the
pathway to my dreams.
• DREAMY DETAILS: My living room resembled a big luffy cloud with a white slipcovered sectional, big and
comfy for family gatherings and unexpected sleepovers. A large leather Moroccan ottoman and pillows in
velvet and matelassé textures add comfort and style.
• AIRY ATMOSPHERE: A pure white Corian kitchen counter and built-in loating shelves enhance the feel of an
open-plan kitchen.
• COZY SLEEPING SPACES: Beach living inspires relaxing spaces to snooze. I have made oversized daybeds
covered in pink washable canvas and will add an area rug to make an outdoor space more inviting. And in
an outdoor cottage, I built a platform of drawers with a mattress on top with an abundance of bolsters and
pillows to serve as a daybed.

Sitting on almost nine acres of land, the home is surrounded by the beauty of the
countryside, including fruit trees, cherry trees, olive groves, old farm homes and a view of
the Luberon mountains, providing a relaxing atmosphere perfect for European vacationers.
“It’s bucolic luxury. You’re very aware you’re in the countryside, but you haven’t been on

he ireplace needed quite a bit of work. It had always been the focal point of the living
room, yet the original design made the entire space appear outdated. “he original inish
was orangey brick with gray grout, something that might have been nice in 1927,” she says.
Here too, as with the home’s new colors, Danielle added seaside elements. he original
brick has been replaced with something called heartland stone, which is fossilized rock found
on the ocean loor. “he material has two sides,” she says. “One shows the fossilized plant
matter, while the other side’s texture reminds me of a wave on the beach during low tide.”

UNIQUE TOUCHES
Pulling from nature will always make a home more inviting, Danielle suggests. And in her home, guests
will ind dried starish on bookshelves, framed sea fans on walls, and dazzling seashells dotting wreaths.
“Decorating your home can be so personal,” she says, “I’ve always been drawn to the beach. I think it’s so
calming and peaceful.”
But feel free to mix it up as well. Danielle loves to experiment with texture and suggests adding wooden
pieces to a home. Painted wood can add interest, or bare, rich wood can bring a sense of warmth. And wooden
furniture might remind guests of beautiful boats bobbing among the waves. “If you add your own unique
pieces, no one will ever have the exact same look as you,” Danielle says.

With the 1930s-era house overlooking the sea towards

to make it look soter and prettier, more like a New England

just ordinary MDF boarding, according to Rory, is to grout the
boards in vertical lines to look like wooden planking.
On the interior, the home features a family sitting room, an
open-plan kitchen, a dining room, four bedrooms and three
bathrooms. he layout is just enough space for the family to

Other renovations updated the historic home and continued
the charming coastal theme. he old 1960s windows were
replaced with new; the old 1970s conservatory was turned into
a proper dining room overlooking the sea and the newly decked
terrace. he old garage was turned into a teenage den, giving
both youth and adult groups a space of their own.

onger days and that fresh
feeling of freedom that
comes with the warmer
months beckon us to fully enjoy
spending our time outdoors.
What better way to indulge in
the best hours of summer than
with a picnic at sunset? As the
day progresses into evening,
the weather cools to the perfect
temperature for relaxing with
good company, delicious food
and a glass of wine.
WHERE TO GO
You don’t have to hike to a
mountaintop overlook or lug
your cooler to an overcrowded
public park to enjoy a meal
outside. Ideally, the perfect
picnic spot is easy to access,
quiet and free of unwelcome
critters. We picked a location in
our local wine country, where
rows of grapevines cover the
rolling hills and glow under the
setting sun. This spot is not only
private, but the pretty scenery is
perfect for conversation.
WHAT TO PACK
• BLANKET: A picnic blanket is a
must, and not just any old blanket
will do. Your best bet will resist
stains and spills, provide a clean
and comfortable place to sit and
enhance the atmosphere.

VICTORIAN Visit
SEE THE HISTORIC AND RELIGIOUS ROOTS OF THIS CHARMING TOWN.
N
estled in the heart of Oak
Bluffs, Massachusetts,
is the Martha’s Vineyard
Campground Meeting Association, a
walkable National Historic Landmark
known for its Victorian gingerbread
cottages and historic significance.
The campground was originally
built to hold religious meetings, and
people would come from all over
to pitch tents and stay for these
events. From 1859 to 1880, the
tents gradually gave way to
wooden structures.
With Gothic Revival-style pointed
and arched windows and doors,
elaborate trim, latticework, scalloped
shingles, picket fences, wraparound
porches and gable roofs, the
cottages resemble dollhouses. Today
Martha’s Vineyard Campground
Meeting Association houses over
312 privately owned Victorian
gingerbread cottages in a truly
unique community.
