Yar e Man

The poem expresses the speaker's longing for their beloved to visit them. It describes sacrificing themselves for the beloved and hoping the beloved will come to visit them, attend their funeral if they die, or at least visit their grave. The speaker's life feels dependent on the beloved coming to see them. They worry that if the beloved does not come soon, it may be too late as the speaker's soul feels it is leaving their body already in their longing to reunite with the beloved.

The lyrics are here: Khabaram raseed imshab ke

nigaar khuahi aamad;

Sar-e man fidaa-e raah-e ki sawaar khuahi aamad.
Mila hai raat ye muzda ke yaar aaey gaFida hooN
raah pe jiss se sawaar aaey ga
Ham-e aahuwan-e sehra sar-e khud nihada bar kaf;
Ba-umeed aankie roze bashikaar khuahi aamad.
Gizaal-e-dasht hatheli pe sar liye hongeIss aas par
ke tu bahr-e-shikaar aaey ga
Kashishe ke ishq daarad naguzaradat badinsaa;
Ba-janazah gar nayai ba-mazaar khuahi aamad.
Kashish jo ishq meiN hai, be asar nahiiN hogi
Janaze par na sahi, bar mazaar aaey ga
Balabam raseed jaanam tou biya ke zindah
maanam;
Pas azaan ke mann na-maanam bache kar khuahi
aaamad.
LaboN pe jaan hai, tu aaey tou rahoN zindaRaha na
meiN tou mujhe kya ke yaar aaey ga
Ba-yak aamdan radoodi dil-o-diin-o-jaan-o-khusro
Cheh shuwad agar ba-diiNsaaN dou she baar
khuahi aamad
Fida kiye dil-o-diiN ik jhalak pe “Khushro” neKare
ga kya jo tu dou teen baar aaey ga

yaarey man biya: come here my beloved.
balabam raseeda janam: my life is on my lips.
tu biya ke zinda manam: come here and make me
alive .
Khabaram raseed imshab ki nigaar khuahi aamad;
Sar-e man fidaa-e raah-e ki sawaar khuahi aamad.
Ham-e aahwan-e sehra sar-e khud nihada bar kaf;
Ba-umeed aanki rozi bashikaar khuahi aamad.
Kashishi ki ishq daarad naguzaradat badinsaa;
Ba-janazah gar nayai ba-mazaar khuahi aamad.
Balabam raseed jaanam fabiya ki zindah maanam;
Pas azan ki man na-maanam bacha kar khuahi

—————————————————————————–
Tonight there came a news that you, oh beloved,
would come –
Be my head sacrificed to the road along which you
will come riding!
All the gazelles of the desert have put their heads
on their hands
In the hope that one day you will come to hunt
them….
The attraction of love won’t leave you unmoved;
Should you not come to my funeral,
you’ll definitely come to my grave.
My soul has come on my lips (e.g. I am on the point
of expiring);
Come so that I may remain alive –
After I am no longer – for what purpose will you
come?(trans. A. Schimmel)
