Auxiliary Heater Control Guide

The document discusses the auxiliary heater control unit (SHZH) that controls and monitors the operation of a stationary auxiliary heater. It communicates with the master control unit (IHKA) via the LIN bus. It controls heating and electrical components to generate heat. It also monitors internal components and sends any faults to the IHKA unit. If there is an internal fault with the SHZH unit or voltage supply, it will stop auxiliary heater operation. Diagrams show the connections and pin assignments of the SHZH unit to other vehicle systems. Specifications for the supply voltage and operating temperature range of the SHZH unit are also provided.

Independent/auxiliary heater
A control unit is installed in the auxiliary heater. The SHZH control unit (control unit of stationary auxiliary heater) controls
and monitors the stationary heating operation.

Functional description
The SHZH control unit communicates with the IHKA control unit via the LIN bus. The IHKA control unit is the master control
unit.
The SHZH control unit informs the master control unit of its internal statuses (e.g. switching statuses, defects). The faults are
dealt with via the local interconnect network bus.
The auxiliary heater control unit controls heating and controls and adjusts all electrical components necessary for controlled
heat generation.
In addition to all inputs and outputs, the SHZH control unit also monitors the internal components (self-test). Possible faults
are stored in the IHKA control unit. In the event of an internal fault to the auxiliary heater control unit or the voltage supply
then the entire auxiliary heater operation is stopped.

The auxiliary heater control unit is connected to the vehicle electrical system via 3 plug connections.
The SHZH control unit communicates with the IHKA control unit via the LIN bus.
The front right power distribution box supplies the SHZH control unit with terminal 30B.
The SHZH control unit activates the following components:
l Circulating pump, auxiliary heater (pin assignment: U and terminal 31E)
l Coolant changeover valve, auxiliary heating (pin assignment: U2)
l Fuel metering pump, auxiliary heating (pin assignment: U3)

Pin assignments
The graphic above shows only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment is recorded on the wiring
diagrams in the ISTA diagnosis system (Integrated Service Technical Application). Click on the component code in the wiring
diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.

Nominal values
Observe the following setpoint values for the SHZH control unit:

Variable Value

Supply voltage 9 to 16 V

Temperature range -40 to 85 °C

Diagnosis instructions
Failure of the component
If the communication to the SHZH control unit fails, run the standard checks (global testing procedure). If there is an internal
control unit fault, the following behaviour is to be expected:
l Fault entry in the IHKA control unit
