Brown Seaweed Extraction Method

The document outlines the methodology for extracting brown seaweeds (Sargassum polycystum) which includes washing and drying the seaweed samples, grinding them, and sieving before storing at -20 degrees Celsius. It then describes using a hot water extraction method by varying temperature, contact time, and seaweed to solvent ratio to optimize the process, heating the seaweed in water while stirring, cooling the extract, and filtering the supernatant before storing at -20 degrees Celsius. The extracts will be analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Methodology for the Extraction of Brown Seaweeds (Sargassum polycystum)

Extraction of Brown Seaweeds

Preparation

The brown seaweed samples will be washed first with deionized distilled water to

remove foreign particles. The seaweeds will then be dried at room temperature and will

be grounded afterwards. They will be sieved (8mm) before being put upon containers that

will be preserved at -20 degrees Celsius until the day of extraction.

Hot Water Extraction

Hot water extraction method will be used on the sieved brown seaweeds. Water

will used as the extraction solvent. Optimization of the extraction condition will be carried

out by varying the temperature, contact time and seaweed to solvent ratio. The brown

seaweed samples will be heated at a varying temperature with distilled water in an

Erlenmeyer flask while being continuously stirred. The extract will then be cooled to room

temperature. Afterwards, the supernatants will be filtered using a filter paper. The

infusions extracted will again be preserved in the dark at -20◦ Celsius.
