1. Locks the bed. 2
2. Lowers the head of the bed and places patient supine. 1
3. Ensures that a friction-reducing device such as a transfer roller
sheet is in place, improvises with a plastic bag or film under patient, 1
if needed.
4. Lowers the side rail on the side where caregiver is standing;

keeps rail up on opposite side.
5. Raises height of the bed to waist level. 2
6. Positions one staff member at the patient’s head and shoulders,
responsible for moving the head and neck as a unit. Positions the
other person at the patient’s hips. If three staff members are 1
needed, positions one at the shoulders, one at the waist, and the
third at thigh level.
7. Instructs the patient to fold her arms across her chest. 2
8. Places a pillow between the patient’s knees.

9. Each nurse positions her feet with a wide base of
support, with one foot slightly more forward than the

other.

10. Uses a draw sheet to move the patient to the side of

the bed on which the caregiver are standing
11. One nurse always supports the head and shoulders
during the move. The move is smooth so that the head

and hips are kept in alignment.

12. Positions the patient’s head with a pillow.

15. All caregiver position their feet with a wide base of
support, with one foot forward of the other. Places
weight on the forward foot. 1

evenly along the length of the draw sheet.
17. All nurses flex their knees and hips, and shift their
weight to the back foot on the count of three, being 3
sure to support head as patient is rolled
18. Places pillows to maintain the patient in a lateral position. 2
19. Places bed in low position and raises side rails. 2
20. Places call bell within reach. 2
