ABOUT THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES
The summer internship is designed to benefit the students, the host
organizations and the Centre for Management Studies, Dharmsinh Desai
University (CMSDDU)

By design, Summer Internship permits to build an interface between


classroom and field-based traineeship to provide linkages between
theoretical concepts and practical experience

Summer internship – an opportunity for students

 Study and demonstrate the role of a professional manager in an


organization

 Develop appropriate attitudes, values and skills required of a


professional manager

 Test the applicability of management concepts and techniques

 Develop an integrated understanding of functioning of organizations


associated with CMSDDU.

Gains to host organizations

 Undertake a diagnostic analysis of select aspects of managerial


functions such as marketing, finance, accounting and costing, human
resources, manufacturing etc.

 Undertake projects/studies for organizations that may not otherwise


be undertaken for want of professional managerial resources

 Receive valuable suggestions leading to higher efficiency and reduction


in cost.

Gains to institute

 Develop case leads, field projects/problems as inputs to the MBA


curriculum.

 Be responsive to the needs of the organizations associated with


CMSDDU

 Use feedback from management traineeship experience for MBA


curriculum development

SUMMER INTERNSHIP – OPERATIONALISING
The summer internship is of eight weeks.

 During summer internship, the students work on projects pertaining


to managerial concerns under the supervision of a company guide and
a Faculty Guide at the Institute.

 Upon joining organization, the students rely on company guide for


guidance while keeping the faculty guide informed of their progress

 Before leaving the organization, the students present their findings to


the organization and submit a draft report after incorporating change
suggested during the presentation.

 Any significant revisions suggested by the Faculty Guide are


communicated to organization in the final report. The draft report is
considered final if there are no major revisions suggested by the
faculty guide.

 Summer internship is evaluated and is treated as two credit course.

EXPECTATIONS FROM THE ORGANIZATIONS:
 Provide adequate project details in the form to enable students to have
a clear understanding of the problem

 The project provides enough learning opportunities for the students

 All activities, from project initiation to final project preparation, may be


planned to keep pace with the time allocated for summer internship

 Ensure that the officer nominated as guide has sufficient time for
guiding students.

 Ask the students to submit a copy of the draft report and ensure that a
presentation is made to the concerned officers in your organization
during the summer internship itself.

 Ensure that the students follow the rules and norms applicable to the
officers of your organization.

 Report leave availed or absence, if any to the faculty guide of the


student, CMSDDU.

 Settle all accounts before the departure of students

 Please ensure that evaluation report, reliving report, payment of


stipend and other expenses (if applicable) are settled.

 Any incident of student misconduct or absence must be immediately


report to the concerned faculty guide of the student of CMSDDU.

 Project Report Completion Certificate (Format given at page number

 Advise the students clearly on the rules of the organization and the
permissible expenses procedures involved in settling the claims

Expected facilitation from the host organization

 Travel, Stipend/Allowance, Accommodation where applicable,


Incidental expenses such as local conveyance while on tour, survey
expenses, Typing, photocopying and other facilities may be provided to
the students.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

1. Project Proposal: 10%


(Submission within 10 days; It includes reporting on 1st May 2019,
Selection of topic, Brief Introduction of Research Topic, Research
Methodology, Information about guide)
Brief plan of evaluating each area of project indicating days planned to be
allocated for each area.
2. Mid-Term Evaluation: 20%
2.1 Research Problem/Training Theme: 5%
2.2 Research Method: 5%
2.3 presentation skills: 5%
2.4 Apparent Work Done: 5%
(We will ask students that in mid-term they should make a
presentation of 15 minutes + 5 minutes for query. In it, they are
expected to share what they have done and what they plan to do. We
will ask them not to include company history/theories in the
presentation. We will assess primarily in it, whether their track is right
or not)
The presentation has to be done with only points recorded on slides and the
slides sent to faculty guide well in advance.
3. External Guide Evaluation: 20%
(External guide will give marks out of 50 and evaluate the student on
the basis of Research Problem/Training Theme, Research Method
used, Work done & Inferences; Interpretations of the result obtained,
Executive Summery, Overall Presentation and Report as shown in
format)

4. Internal Guide evaluation: 10%


(Evaluation will be based on your content of the project, work done,
regularity in reporting)

5. Project Report: 10%


(Final Project Report Submission; Hard copy & Softcopy in CD must be
submitted on or before 1st July 2019)

6. Final Presentation: 30%

SUMMER INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES FOR THE STUDENTS
 Remember to carry your identity card, wherever you go.

 Report to the organization without fail on scheduled date

 Do not make any false claims for journeys for which you have not made
or paid. Claim reimbursement of actual expenses wherever eligible from
only one organization.

 During the summer internship, follow the rules of the conduct and
regulations of the concerned organization. Please familiarize yourself with
the procedures and rules of the organization, especially regarding the
financial matters. Be sufficiently clear about the permissible expenses
and limits and the mode of claiming. Any indiscipline, in financial
matters, brought to the notice of CMSDDU by the host organization would
be viewed very seriously.

 You are not permitted any leave during the Summer Internship period. In
emergency, apply for leave to the concerned faculty guide at CMSDDU.
You must keep the company guide informed about the same. Any
unauthorized absence brought to the notice of CMSDDU will be viewed
very seriously as a breach of discipline and attract appropriate penalties.

 Formal dressing, courteous behavior, well preparedness, study of the


project subject from books & other learning source are basic requirement.

 Send weekly reports to your faculty guide. Send them on Saturdays when
your work is done for that week and you have planned your next week’s
work.

 You are expected to make an oral presentation of findings and your


recommendations to the host organization at the end of the project work.
With the helps of your company guide, schedule all such presentations
well in advance. You should do your best to incorporate comments and
suggestions in Draft Report before coming to CMSDDU.

Before you leave your host organization, ensure that:

 Settle all accounts.

 Submit one typed copy of your project report (A4 size) to the organization.
Make it clear that the reports submitted are final unless the faculty guide
suggests major revisions.

 Executive summary must be included in the report.

 The executive summary should include – the objective of the project, the
methodology used, the source of data, your findings and their
implications. Drawbacks or limitations of your study should be
highlighted. All these details should be preferably in running text, with
appropriate sub-headings, wherever necessary. Summer Internship
project executive summary should not exceed one page.

 Project report will have to be submitted in soft and hard copy to your
faculty guide well in advance with well prepared slides for final
presentation.

STYLE MANUAL FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIP REPORT


The format of the report: The reports to be submitted to the faculty guide
should be on good quality A4 size paper. The print out should be taken on
only one side of paper. The students are also required to submit a CD
containing the report along with the hard copy. The soft copy of the report
should be in MS-Word-2003 (*.doc) format.
- Ensure that the printing starts from the top of the page.
- Give top and bottom margins 1” each.
- Use standard size of paper – these dimensions are for a Standard A-4
size paper.
- Locate the page number at the bottom centre for the page
- Give line spacing of 1.5
- Leave a margin of 1” each on the right and left side of an A-4 size
paper. The hard copy should be taken using TIMES NEW ROMAN font
size 12 pitch.
- Every report should start with a title page that would contain the
following information. The matter should appear on the centre of the
each line and should be in the following format:

 The second page should contain acknowledgements if any.


 The third page should contain the executive summary in the following
format:
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

After these details, the summary of the report should be in running text. The
summary should contain objectives and the scope of the study methodology,
sources of data, major findings, the conclusions drawn and
recommendations given by the students. The students may choose to have
sub-heads for the relevant details that will be given in the summary of the
report. The executive summary should normally not exceed one page and
should be in single line spacing.

 The fourth page should contain the table of contents, with chapter
headings and page numbers

 List of tables, if any, along with page numbers should follow the table of
contents.

 The next page should contain the list of figures (if any)

 A blank page after which the main body of the report would start

 Any material borrowed from published or unpublished sources should be


duly acknowledged. This should be carried in the list of references to be
provided at the end of the text.

 References should be complete in all respects and arranged in
alphabetical order.

a) In the text, the references should appear as follows: Dayal (2002) has
shown… or Recent studies (Ramnarayan, 2002; Chandra, 2001)
indicate…

b) Journal references should be listed as follows: Khandwalla, P N (2001).

Guidelines for progress report presentation to be made on
June 01, 2019:

1. Each and every student must be prepared with (PPT: it should be to the
point) presentation of the work done up to May 31, 2019.

2. Please show us what you have done, are planning to do and will
hopefully be doing as a part of your summer training. Avoid company
history, mission, vision, objectives or any theoretical aspect in your
presentation. You are advised to maintain a log/diary of everything you
do on daily basis. Especially, if you are carrying out a qualitative
research, this is almost a must.

3. Time allotted for presentation would be 20 minutes including question


and answers. (15 minutes presentation+5 minutes queries)

4. Every student is required to make a presentation of the work done


and they must send the PPT of that presentation to their respected
guides by May 31, 2019, 11:59 PM. For any further clarification, you
can contact your respected guide.

5. If you fail to comply with any of these instructions, we will be forced


to penalize you in terms of negative marking.
