ANSWER KEY 1.2-1

The HILOT, the ancient art of Filipino healing by touch, is one of the oldest forms of
healing in the Philippines. The term “Hilot” derives from a Filipino word meaning
“Massage”. The art of Hilot dates back approximately in the first Philippine civilization in
the 5th century. In particular, people born breech were supposedly called upon to receive
the special gift of healing by touch

For most Filipinos, it is one of the first intervention that is ought when one is not

Locating the Bara/Pasma (Energy Blockages)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this information you must be able to identify and explain the
methods in locating Bara/Pasma (energy blockages)

1.PALPATION

 The most common method utilized is by palpation

 The hilot practitioner’s hand is very sensitive to detect
any lumps, knots, tender areas or differences in
temperature in an area or areas compared to the rest of
the body
 Hilot is usually started with palpating the parts of the
body where the patient feels pain, discomfort, numbness
or tingling sensations

2.PULSEDIAGNOSIS

 Almost all hilot practitioner perform pulse

diagnosis on their patients
 The thumbs are used to palpate the pulses
 European and North American medicine
practitioners would most likely frown on this practice of
using the thumbs for detecting the pulses

PULSEDIAGNOSIS...

 The thumb has a pulse and may distract

in the counting of the pulse of the patient
 The hilot however the pulse rate is not
taken unlike pulse taking in European and
North American medicine

There Are Three Reasons For The Difference Between Detecting The Pulse In
The Two System

 First, Filipino tradition of pulse diagnosis has never used any wrist watch or
clock and taking the pulse rate has not been part of the hilot practice
 Second, the hilot practitioner senses the pulse as it runs through the thumb,
noting their strength, intensity, flow and vibrancy

The pulse is described as similar to movement of animals, whether they are

snakelike, wormlike, or like a deer hopping, a frog jumping or a dog persistently
barking

 Third, in hilot the pulse are taken in both wrists of the patient, at a times
simultaneously, using both thumbs and alternately

Through this method of pulse diagnosis, the excess or deficiency of the cold or hot
humors of the body of the patients, or the presence of excess wind is determined and
related to the symptoms of the patient.

3.BANANALEAFMETHOD

The banana leaf is utilized in hilot to assist in determining where the energy block is.
The leaf of the cooking banana, saba variety is prepared over other species of
bananas

INFORMATION SHEET 1.2-3
Locating the Bara/Pasma (Energy Blockages)

 The banana leaf is cut into lengths of one (1) foot to one and
half (1-1/2) feet and width of two to three inches
 The banana leaf strips are then laced with coconut oil,
warmed over candle fire and run through the different body areas
 If the banana leaf strip stops at a particular body area or if the
hilot practitioner senses a tug of the banana leaf against the skin
of the patient, such body area is considered to have the energy
block.
 Massage is then focused on these areas where the banana
leaf strip stops or tugs.

Because the pressure areas of the hilots coincide with acupuncture

points, it is possible that the former may have some kind of electrical
property just like the latter.

This will help explain the phenomenon of the banana leaf, cellophane, or paper
sticking to locate the bara.

BANANALEAFMETHOD...

 Acupuncture points are considered loci through which biological

electrical current escapes relatively more easily to the body
surface

 This characteristic of acupuncture point is escape of its property

of lower skin electrical resistance compared to the other body
areas
 Electrical current exists all over the body as a
result of muscular, neural, and other activities of
the body

 Kirlian photography has likewise shown the

emission of electrical energy by the body
 Another source of the electrical current is the
presence of positive and negative ions e.g. Na, K, Ca,
in the body
 If any part of the body is in an imbalanced state, a leak,
consisting of either positive or negative ions ions depending on
the imbalance, occurs at acupuncture points

BANANALEAFMETHOD...

 On the other hand, paper, cellophane, or banana leaf are themselves

composed of electrons and protons

Locating the Bara/Pasma (Energy Blockages)

 When they are placed over the areas that have high concentration of ions,
whether positive or negative, their own positrons and electrons are polarized
accordingly, the electrons of the paper, cellophane or banana leaf will
concentrate nearest positively charged areas of the body
 As a consequence, the paper, cellophane or banana leaf sticks to that
particular area where the bara is to be found and which, as mentioned earlier,
coincides with an acupuncture point

BANANALEAFMETHOD...

 Another probable explanation of why the paper,

cellophane, or banana leaf to find the bara, which are
probably acupuncture point is because of the difference
in pressure in the cell membrane and that of the
atmosphere

 Cell membranes have a certain voltage (V) because of the electrical potential of
the body
 Based on Ohm’s Law where R = VI, the lesser the resistance R, the greater the
flow of current I
 Consequently, pressure becomes lower when the velocity is greater
(Bernoulli’s Principle)
 Because acupuncture points have relatively less skin resistance than other
parts of the body, especially in diseased states, it is probable that the pressure
here is also diminished
 The resulting differences in pressure between a particular point in the body
and atmosphere could cause the paper or banana leaf to be “suctioned” or
“stuck”.

4.RAWEGGMETHOD

 There have been no investigate studies to find out the science behind the
raw egg as diagnostic tool for hot-cold imbalances

5.USEOFCELLOPHANEANDEMPTYBOTTL

 Hilots have also used cellophane sheets, two (2) inches by four (4) inches in
size, and empty round bottles, six (6) inches tall and four (4) inches

THE HILOT PRESSURE POINTS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this information you must be able to identify and explain hilot
pressure points in accordance with hilot principles.

CHARACTERISTICS

The hilot pressure points are parts of the

body where the hilot palpates a bara
(blockage). The bara is supposedly the site of
a blockage of circulation or wind trapped in
the body.

These pressure areas are usually felt as a kind of swelling or hardening of the
tissues of the affected area of the body which the hilots describe further as maganit
(leather tough) and hindi sumasama sa hipo (does not move with palpation)

• In this aspect, the pressure points of the hilot are similar to acupressure
points which may be felt as an usually hard area in a strip of muscle within
a group of muscle in the presence of disease.
• The hilot pressure points are tender when touched, sore when massaged

THE HILOT PRESSURE POINTS
CH A R A CT E R IS T ICS . . .
• Acupressure points exhibit the same property when the internal organs is in
disease state.
• The tenderness of acupuncture points, however, has been attributed to an
energy leak in the point due to an imbalance in the body
• The hilot pressure points encompasses portions or areas of the body rather
than mere dot-like points
• In fact, the bara sites of cough, upper and lower back pain and numbness of
extremities actually correspond to acupuncture points for the same
indications.
• Thus, the bara describe by the traditional healers can actually be sites of
energy imbalances and not fractures or dislocations as most commonly
thought of.
• The symptomatology of bara (i.e. colds, cough, fever, listlessness) do not
correspond to those of fracture and dislocation of the ribs, except for fever.
• The allusion of the traditional healers to the ribs vertebrae being the site of
illness is understandable
• Firstly, because the bara especially in the children, almost always occurs after
a fall
• Secondly, in the simple minds of the traditional healer the area from the rib
cage to the vertebral column is the most tangible and familiar structure of the

body that could be affected, the traditional healer having grown up in an

environment wherein traditional ethics was in order.

• Finally, the pressure points of the hilots are named according to the point of
the body where they are found, e.g. dibdib (chest), sentido (temple), ulo
(head)

THE HILOT PRESSURE POINTS
LOCATION

• Location of the hilot pressure points vary and is dependent on where the bara
(energy blockage) is felt by the practitioner.
• Usually, the practitioner palpates some form of in duration over the affected area
said to have the blockage
• As previously described, the hilot practitioner also makes use of banana leaf strip,
paper, cellophane, amber bottle to determine the area of blockages
• So, for every individual the location of treatment varies even if the complaints are
the same i.e. colds, fever.
• In this aspect, the hilot pressure points are skin to ah-si points
• Ah-si points are tender or sensitive spots in the body, which have no definite
locations or names, present in certain disease

INDICATIONS

• The hilot pressure areas do not have any assigned indications

• The choice of points for treatment is dependent on the location of the bara rather

than on points with previously determined indications for certain illness, as in

acupressure
• Indication of the hilot’s pressure points is limited to the area where the bara is
located and its symptomatology, e.g., the bara in the chest is usually associated
with cough and colds, pasma in the legs, with numbness and muscle aches
• Such limitations of indications shows that the hilot has no theory akin to that of
the meridian system which enables the use of pressure points remote from the
site of complaint for treatment

THE HILOT PRESSURE POINTS
FREQUENCY OF TREATMENT

• Hilot is usually given on an average of three (3) sessions, usually everyday

• A feeling of wellness is expected after the first session
• The application of hilot more than once a day is not recommended

PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS

• After a hilot, a bath is not recommended until after at least twenty four (24) hours
• Some practitioners prohibit a bath up to three (3) days until the whole regiment of
massage has been completed
• According to the hilot practitioner, the sudden change in temperature while
taking a bath does not encourage the restoration of the balance of elements in the
body

massage techniques

VENTOSA

• A method of treating disease, promoting health, and preventing illness

through the use of glass jar or cup. It is known as “pa-hou-kuan” in
Chenese and is oftentimes translated as “cupping” in English. In ventosa
heat is introduced inside the jar in order to create a vacuum to suction
particular parts of the body
• Ventosa is part of our indigenous medicine. It has been widely practiced in
the Philippines, for it has proven to be effective. Yet until now, no thorough
research has been conducted to evaluate the merits of this healing
procedure.

VENTOSA

• The earliest known record on ventosa could be found in

China as early as the fourth or third century B.C. It was known
as the “horn method” because of the use of animal horns. As
technology advanced, the people began using jar made of
bamboo, clay and glass.

• At present, the most commonly used ventosa jar is the glass cup, It is
preferred because it is transparent and lets the practitioners see the
skin reaction of the patient being treated. The ordinary household glass
could be used, as long as its rim is smooth, well rounded and does not
have any cracks which could damage the patient’s skin.

INDICATIONS

Ventosa helps to restore and maintain the free flow of Qi. It has a mild
warming effect and hence, could be used for cases arising from an attack of
cold in the exterior or interior. In general, ventosa is used to treat pain due to
the impairment to the free-flow of Qi and blood.

Ventosa is beneficial for the following cases:

1. Arthritis (especially in case of cold and damp BI syndromes)

3. Paralysis
4. Muscle cramps
5. Myalgia, pain in the joints and other signs referable to stuck Qi
6. Retention of food in the stomach and spleen; and
7. External attack of wind-cold

Ventosa could also be used to treat boils and abscess, but only when it has
vesiculated. Some text suggest the use of ventosa as a first aid treatment for
snake bites.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

In general, ventosa should not be applied to patient who are:

1. Unconscious
2. Convulsing or have a history of convulsions
3. Highly febrile
4. Suffering from bleeding disorders
5. pregnant
