Program: B. Tech. Semester: I
Course Code: MATH-1005 Course Name: Calculus

Note: 1. Exercises /168/T1 means the problem has been taken from the exercises/page No.168/ book T1.
2. The answers of the problems are provided in the concerned books.

Topic1: Rolle’s Theorem, Mean value theorem, Taylor’s theorem

2. In the following exercises, check the hypotheses of Rolle’s Theorem and find a value of c that makes the appropriate
conclusion true. (Exercises/168/T1)
(i). f (x) = x2 + 1, [−2, 2] , (ii). f (x) = x3 + x2, [0, 1] , (iii). f (x) = sin x, [0, π/2]
3. State Mean Value theorem. What is its geometrical and physical interpretation?
4. In the following exercises, check the hypotheses of Mean Value theorem and find a value of c that makes the appropriate
conclusion true. (Exercises/168/T1)
(i) f (x) = x2 + 1, [−2, 2] , (ii) f (x) = x3 + x2, [0, 1] , (iii) f (x) = sin x, [0, π/2]
5. Using the corollary of mean value theorem, determine whether the function is increasing, decreasing or neither.
(i)f (x) = x3 + 5x + 1, (ii)f (x) = −x3 − 3x + 1, (iii) ƒ(x) = x3 - 12x – 5 (Exercises/168/T1and )(Example240/T2)
6. Give the statement of Taylor’s Theorem. What is its significance?
*7. Consider the function f(x) = (1/ x) − 2 on the interval [1, 3]. Using the Mean Value Theorem we can conclude:
(a) The graph of the function has a tangent line between 1 and 3 with slope 8/3 .
(b) The graph of the function has a tangent line between 1 and 3 with slope – 1/ 3 .
(c) The function has a zero in the interval [1, 3].
(d) The Mean Value Theorem does not apply because this function is not continuous in [1, 3].
(e) The Mean Value Theorem does not apply because this function is not differentiable in [1, 3]
