Anaerobic Sludge Stabilization Design

The document describes the design of a sludge stabilization unit and sludge drying beds for a water treatment system. The sludge stabilization unit uses anaerobic digestion with a 5.5 meter vertical side depth and 11 day digestion period. The sludge drying bed design calculates that with 2500 kg of sludge applied per day, providing 75 beds of 11m x 7m size (5775m2 total area) will be sufficient based on a 0.3m sludge layer over 35 cycles per year.

SLUDGE STABILIZATION UNIT
 Provide anaerobic sludge stabilization of organic solids
 High rate anaerobic digesters (Temp . 35º C)
 Provide a 1m depth for grit accumulation in the bottom
 Provide a 0.6m depth for the scum blanket
 Provide a 0.6m minimum clearance between the floating cover and
maximum digester level.
 Total inactive cone depth =1m
 Total inactive upper depth of digester =0.6m +0.6m =1.2m

 Provide the active side water depth of 5m

 Provide the diameter of digester = 2m
 Provide the vertical side depth = 5.5m
 Provide the digestion period of 11 days

DESIGN OF SLUDGE DRYING BEDS

Sludge applied to drying beds at 100 kg/MLD
Sludge applied = 2500 kg/day
Specific gravity =1.015
Solid content = 1.5%
2500
Volume of sludge = [ ] × [1 ÷ (1000 × 1.015)] = 164.2 M3/day
1.5

Considering monsoon etc. , the total number of cycle in one year = 35

Period of each cycle = 365 ÷ 35 = 10.5 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠
Volume of sludge /cycle = 164.2 × 10.5 = 1724.1 𝑚3
Spreading a layer of 0.3m/cycle area of beds required = 1724.1 ÷ 0.3 = 5747 𝑚2
Provide 75 beds of 11m x 7m
Thus providing 5775m2 area
provide a wet well of size 1.5m x 2m with a liquid depth of 1m.
