Indian Institute of Technology Goa: MA 105 Calculus Autumn 2016 SRG Quiz 1

This document contains a quiz with 4 multiple choice questions about calculus concepts. Question 1 asks students to show that a sequence is convergent and find its limit. Question 2 asks students to determine which statements about the solutions to an equation are true. Question 3 asks students to prove that the second derivative of a function is equal to 0 for some value between two points. Question 4 asks students to find the absolute maximum of a function and where it occurs. There are also two optional bonus problems, one asking about properties of decreasing sequences and another about the points of continuity of a specific function.

Quiz 1

Date: September 8, 2016 Weightage: 10 %

Time: 2.05 PM – 2.50 PM Max. Marks: 20

1. Let {xn }n≥1 be a sequence of real numbers satisfying x1 > 3 and xn+1 = 6 + xn
for n ∈ N. Show that {xn } is convergent. Also find the limit of the sequence {xn }.
[5 marks]
2. Consider f : R → R defined by f (x) = x2 − x sin x − cos x. Determine which of the
following statements are true:
(i) The equation f (x) = 0 has at least two distinct solutions in R.
(ii) The equation f (x) = 0 has at most two distinct solutions in R.
(iii) The equation f (x) = 0 has exactly two distinct solutions in R.
Justify your answers. [5 marks]
3. Let f : [0, 2] → R be a continuous function such that its second derivative f 00 exists
everywhere on the open interval (0, 2). Suppose the line segment joining (0, f (0))
and (2, f (2)) intersects the graph of f at a third point (t, f (t)), where 0 < t < 2.
Prove that f 00 (c) = 0 for some c ∈ (0, 2). [5 marks]
4. Let n be a positive integer. Consider f : [0, 2π] → R defined by
f (x) = sin2n x cos2n x

for 0 ≤ x ≤ 2π .
Find the absolute maximum of the function f and the points of [0, 2π] at which f
has the maximum value. [5 marks]
Bonus Questions1
B1 Prove that a monotonically decreasing sequence of positive real numbers is always
convergent and its limit is a nonnegative real number.
B2 Let f : [0, ∞) → R be given by

 1 if x = 0,
f (x) = 1/q if x = p/q where p, q ∈ N and p, q have no common factor,
0 if x is irrational.

Determine the set of points in [0, ∞) at which f is continuous.

[Note: This function is known as Thomae’s function.]
